A study looked into whether negative life events are more common in troubled neighborhoods, and if that amplifies adverse effects on health.

The indirect paths between neighborhood conditions and health through negative life event exposure are highly significant and large compared to the direct paths from neighborhood conditions to health. Our results indicate that neighborhood conditions can have acute as well as chronic effects on health, and that negative life events are a powerful mechanism by which context may influence health.

See, I would have thought that living in a crap neighborhood would have a stronger correlation to having crap income and therefore crap access to healthcare and nutrition, which would then have direct, causal relationships with the subject's health. But what do I know?

What if the neighborhood in which you lived for years was a nice and safe place, but it (along with your worldview) was transformed adversely as a result of "changing demographics?"

Whatever you do in that case, you'd best choose your words very carefully and politically correctly in describing it or else you will be labelled a "racist hate criminal" and nobody will listen to anything you say...ever.

What do you mean by unearned privilege?

I'll use me as an example. I moved into a neighborhood that was fairly mediocre (50s strip houses as the home inspector called them) a few years ago--mostly folks who are within a decade of retirement if not retired, although there are some kids around. It's a far cry from a gated community, but I'd consider it "nice and safe."

A black family moved in a few houses down and did some amazing things with the landscaping. Wish I knew how to do that kind of thing--my yard's pretty drab.

Now, depending on how things go and how exactly the economy continues to collapse, in 20 years it might be "transformed adversely." There might even be "changing demographics"---specifically folks like me and that family a few houses down moving out of the state for greener pastures.

Who loses which privilege (earned or unearned) and why?

Yes, he is unhappy about being labeled a racist for complaining about demographic change "adversely transforming" his neighborhood. That's clearly a complaint about a change in the ethnic composition of his neighborhood because nobody calls you a racist if you complain about an increase in the crime rate.

i know that that context is part of his reason for saying that, but he does have a valid point that you've chosen to ignore. poverty and crime often go hand in hand, sometimes by necessity (eg, drug felons cant get food stamps in many states, and are often forced by the system due to a lack of jobs to sell drugs simply to support their family). if 20 people all pool their way-below-minimum-wage salaries, they can easily afford to rent a house in a middle class neighborhood, which can lead to more people moving away, often directly due to racist reasons, which can lead to prices dropping on those new vacancies allowing more poor families to move in.

if all of your experience with a group is terrible (eg, if all the blacks you know are the racist type who call their neighbors "race traitors" for wanting to improve their situation), then that is your reality. stereotypes exist because they are or were often true, but that doesnt mean that everyone in the group is like that or that they cant change.

using EtOH-Fueled as an example, if all of the mexicans he's ever met are all gansta thugs, then thats his truth from his experiences. for all we know, he's going out of his way to meet other mexicans to try to find some that dont fit the stereotype he's encountered and continually turned up short. i'm pretty sure he knows that not all mexicans are like that, but has apparently had some pretty bad people gravitating towards his neighborhood. these days, a lot of people really are quick to call somebody a racist simply for stating their observations. one or two statements does not a racist make.

i'll probably get downmodded for this and possibly called a racist myself (which further proves the point that people are quick to claim "racist!"), but i've got plenty of spare karma on top of being maxed out.

It wasn't obvious to me that his problem was with "mexicans." He didn't spell out which ethnic group his animosity was directed at.

My issue with him is that either:

                    (1) He's a total asshole
                    or
                    (2) He sucks at math

I choose to believe that someone smart enough to want to hang out here probably does not have such poor math skills that he would confuse a singular characteristic (ethnicity) with a general inferiority. So that leaves asshole as the most likely explanation.

More often it's minimum sentencing laws that are the problem there. Get caught selling drugs white people more typically buy? Slap on the wrist if you're an "upstanding member of society." Get caught selling drugs black people more typically buy? Minimum sentencing laws get your ass behind bars for a long time. Even better? The same applies for drug use. Caught with X? No problemo, "don't do it again," wrist-slap. Caught with coke? Hope you enjoy prison, you thug. The biggest problem with the war on drugs isn't that they are penalizing people for doing drugs, it's that they're penalizing people unequally. If they started throwing more white people in jail, people would vote in representatives that would change the laws.
