FAA has just released guidelines explaining where hobbyists can fly commercially available drones and model airplanes. The agency acknowledges that recreational flying "doesn't require FAA approval" but also makes clear that such activity should "avoid doing anything hazardous to other aircrafts or people and property on the ground."

In short: Use common sense. The new guidelines forbid drone use for commercial purposes. The FAA also published this handy infographic.

Would be nice to have a non-broken link to the FAA site [faa.gov] and perhaps, a direct link to the info-graphic [imgur.com] instead of going through some wordpress blog.

Thanks for bringing that to my notice. I had inserted the correct links (and, I had checked them) prior to posting the story.

For some reason it turned out to be really hard to get the link correct before I posted. All the other editors tried as well and it was frustrating. It just seemed to randomly not work. It might be a bug in Slash.

I had this fantasy about building a little Arduino powered quadrocopter that'd seek other drones and just hover around near them. The reason for this is that our police department has acquired some drones and are making claims that they promise to behave with them. My take on the matter is: "If they can invade our privacy, then we should be able to observe them in return."

"Should" be able to watch them at any time, for them to watch us they should need a warrant for prolonged direct observation else it be considered harassment at a minimum.

Using one to peer into our windows or over our fences without said warrant should rate peeping tom charges.

Entering our property without a warrant should get them charged with criminal trespass.

In short take away their "in the service of the law" exemptions/amnesties that allow them to be jack-booted bullies. Allowing them to get away with murder because they messed up the address for their raid is just plain wrong. As is prosecuting a surprised victim for self-defence.

Well, now I guess I need to develop IP over Drone. Not just a mobile hotspot, but physically delivering packets from drone to drone.

Seattle woman says drone was peeping in her 27th floor apartment window, and when she grabber her camera and took pictures of it, it quickly zipped away, indicating that the drone was being live-monitored from nearby.

    drones and model airplanes

What's the difference? There is none. The FAA never refers to drones in this release. Drones are just model airplanes, that's all.

can anyone give a non-cynical reason why commercial activities would be banned? It seems like they're killing off an entire market segment for no reason. Is it really as simple as: they want to control use, but personal recreational use is grandfathered?
