While the article at NYMag talks about the result as something one might have guessed, it sure came as surprise to me. Apparently, Narcissists watch more internet porn than non-narcissists, as per scientists from University of Houston-Clear Lake, Texas:

This study examined the relationship between Internet pornography use and Narcissism. Participants (N = 257) completed an online survey that included questions on Internet pornography use and three narcissism measures (i.e., Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Pathological Narcissistic Inventory, and the Index of Sexual Narcissism). The hours spent viewing Internet pornography use was positively correlated to participant's narcissism level. Additionally, those who have ever used Internet pornography endorsed higher levels of all three measures of narcissism than those who have never used Internet pornography.

How could someone as mind-bendingly attractive and awesome as me be a narcissist?

I am no professional in this so take the following as completely uninformed opinion...

Its my observation that narcissism results when one cannot find anyone else to love him/her, so he/she loves [him|her]self.

The internet porn I would think is an unfulfilled dream. Just an imagination of finding anyone else, even if its just a pre-recorded illusion, to have a relationship with.

In those cases, an animal, fruit, or chunk of latex will do, while Rosie and her five sisters do the majority of the physical labor...

I have observed this phenomena - all too much - and these are the conclusions I had arrived at. Your mileage may vary.

I post this anonymously for obvious reasons...

As a hard-core porn addict who has gone through Twelve Step recovery in order to get it out of my life, I can agree with that statement. In meetings, I've encountered time and again porn addicts (and sex addicts in general) who are hard-core narcissists. And I myself have that difficult as well at times.

Yeaaa... naah, mate. I can't see how a true narcissist would venture into the water in the first place; there's no point, water will either hide or distort their perfection.

When you say narcissist, I think of the sales person who keeps selling things we haven't made yet, so we'll have to work overtime to get it ready, after which it turns out that the "sale" never became a signed contract, so he can keep promising new things, that also have to be done before we can get any money, and a year later, the customer can still bail out because nothing has been signed.

The one who then goes home to his wife and puts on his noise cancelling headphones, so that he can't hear his toddler.

If nobody wants to have a relationship with someone like that, how does he have a wife and two kids?

Compare that to a lonely geek with no self worth. Not even talking to women, because "she wouldn't pick me if I was the last man alive". Nobody wants a person with no self worth, and the geek doesn't need to worry about his non-existing wife finding out about him spending hours looking at porn.

I find it hard to believe that the sales person should spend more time watching porn than the lonely geek. But maybe I'm biased - says the geek with no self worth who is trying to cut down on porn usage because my arm hurts and I have this tingly sensation in my fingers.

            > If nobody wants to have a relationship with someone like that, how does he have a wife and two kids?

Don't be a stupid geek. Just because they are unpleasant to have a relationship with doesn't mean none of them will ever have relationships. What it does mean is that it is harder for them to have relationships and they aren't stable without external pressures pushing them together.

??? How exactly can one "use" an image on the Internet? If a mere seeing once is enough, then I guess they have to search far and wide, somewhere in Amazonian rainforests, to find a human who have never seen an Internet pr0n.

You can 'use' said image in the format of a bitmap to illuminate certain pixels on your computer display unit accordingly, thus rendering the image on your retina as you look at it. If said image would be depicting arousing subject matter, viewing it with your eyes may trigger the release of certain chemicals by your brain, as well as increase your blood pressure and heart rate, all to an enjoyable effect.
