If you're a nerd (what are you doing reading this site if you're not a nerd?), and you like music (yes, there are some people that don't), you should check out Orlando Nerd Fest, where many musical nerds will be putting their skills on display. There were will be rocking, there will be rapping, there will be 8-bit bleeping and blooping, there will even be a steampunk pantomime troupe! The even is August 7th to 11th at the Orlando Airport Marriott. Check the link above for more details.

I just thought it was your weird cousin down in Florida. Thanks for the clarification.

I thought all nerds were banned from airports because the homeland has declared that all smart folk are terrorists by default. Only the stupid are allowed to travel or appear in public.

You'll just have to travel in disguise. I recommend emerging from your mom's basement at least 24 hours before needing to be at the airport, bathing just before the flight, and wearing either a sports jersey* or a shirt displaying an American flag.

Fortunately for me, I live in St Petersburg, FL, so I can get there via car and don't have to worry about airports.

*Be prepared to discuss the team's recent wins and losses if you choose a sports jersey.

If traveling through Texas, don't wear a T-shirt displaying the mascot of a certain kind of devil computer [rmitz.org].

I think this is music with nerdy lyrics rather than music made by music nerds or music nerds like.

The "music made by nerds" is I never was in the band/orchestra at school as a kid, but I had friends and dates who were in that, and I can assure you that a bunch of nerdy flute players getting into a huge argument about which of eight different finger combinations is the "best way" to play a C note on a flute is the same social dynamic of a bunch of kids arguing about the "right way" to overclock a CPU or whatever. Right outta mom's basement, just talking about music instead of D+D or 6502 assembly language.

As for "music nerds like" this is interesting as the only real practical obvious social / cultural division between IT types who got a CS degree at exactly 22 yrs vs everyone else, is that subset of 22 yr old grads tends toward being absolutely insufferable about proudly declaring their eternal love for last weeks crappy indie music band of the week which of course was really awesome until they sold out to the man, whereas regular joe IT guy who didn't graduate with a BSCS at 22 tends to have unusually good taste in whatever genre they like. Students might (almost accidentally, or by osmosis) obtain good taste in literature or art or source code at university, but youthful college experience mostly seems to F up good taste in music rather than improve it.

I only hang out with / work with one nerdy guy who actually likes music with lyrics or samples designed to appeal to nerds. I have met several normal or semi-normal people who assume if I like those "computer things" then I'd really like hip hop with nerdy lyrics that they've heard about. After some listening experience, the result is "do not want" or "Do they make sanitizing bleach for my eardrums?". Although if I liked hip hop I'd probably prefer topics that say something interesting to me and I can respect that if they don't F it up as much as TV and hollywood producers F up when they try to wedge computers into their stories. I don't want to hear the "CSI" of nerdy music, for example.

In summary I hope they have a lot of fun, but I don't think most nerds are very interested in their music, for the reasons above.

True, and likewise here. If it's Hip Hop/Rap I'd rather sandpaper my face. I do get a smile from tech related songs though, and 'nerd' popular culture references. Tech gets a special place because I think it's hard to to music and stories relating to it well. I've always loved Jonathan Coulton's "Code Monkey", and in a similar vein, Josh Woodward has a new song called "Dead Code" [youtube.com] that might be a contender. Josh gives his music away for free for the most part, and Ubuntu actually includes one of his songs in the media demos.
