WP reports that researchers from the University of Melbourne surveyed 315 same-sex parents with a total of 500 children. About 80 per cent of the children have female parents, while 18 percent have male parents. The children raised by same-sex partners scored an average of six percent higher than the general population on measures of general health and family cohesion. They were equivalent to those from the general population on measures of temperament and mood, behaviour, mental health and self-esteem.

Lead researcher Dr Simon Crouch said same-sex couples are more likely to share child-care and work responsibilities more equally than heterosexual parent families, based more on skills rather than gender roles. "This appears to be contributing to a more harmonious household and having a positive impact on child health," he said. "But about two-thirds of these children experience some form of stigma due to their parents' sexual orientation."

But Benjamin Siegel, professor of pediatrics at the Boston University School of Medicine, said there are limits with such research. He told Boston University Today last year that none of the studies has been a randomized, controlled trial and that all studies on same-sex parenting are small since there aren't as many same-sex parents.

DARPA Dissects Twitter, Facebook, Reddit to Extract Propaganda HOWTOs 78 comments

On Tuesday, The Guardian posted an article about the US military pouring millions into researching how to become a Twitter-user-influencing, propaganda-spewing machine.

The program in question is known as Social Media in Strategic Communication (SMISC).

SMISC, which was announced in 2011, has been regarded as the means by which the US military can both detect and conduct propaganda campaigns via social media.

While DARPA's social media experiments well might have avoided breaking any law by using only publicly available data, some of its studies are sure to make people uncomfortable.

For example, some of the SMISC research has focused on the Occupy Wall Street protests and those in the Middle East, while other projects have analysed online memes and tweets from celebrities including Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga (described as "the most popular elite user on Twitter", according to The Guardian.

The manager of SMISC, Dr. Rand Waltzman, said in a post that understanding social media is just part of DARPA's "mission of preventing strategic surprise."

Since the actual study doesn't seem to be available, just a press-release style summary, I'm going to make a guesa:

Same-sex parents never get pregnant by accident. So if they have a kid it means they feel prepared - economically and logistically - to care for a child. That's probably going to result in those kids getting higher quality parental attention than from parents who weren't ready for a kid.

Are any error bars given? Six percent on a sample of 300 makes me want to know the statistical significance of the result.

Of course, I have little hope that would be taken into account anyway. You hear on the news leading up to elections all the time that Candidate Jones has pulled ahead in polling 52% to 48% (with a margin of error of 4%). Even when they tell you the margin of error up front, the headline is still "pulls ahead" or "is leading" or something like that. Given the predictable political reactions on this topic, I'm sure much ballyhoo will be made of the result one way or another, even if it isn't statistically significant.

Agreed. Additionally, I would posit that at least some same-sex parents probably feel more pressure to treat their kids properly, even if it's sub-conscious. Even if it's only to prove to "everyone else" how wrong they are.

I wouldn't hesitate to propose that it is most rather than some. I only personally know 3 such families, so this is anecdotal at best, but all three of these couples (2 female and 1 male couple) are some of the best parents I've ever seen. And the male couple are a neighbor who can always be relied on to lend a hand in a time of need.

And not just prepared for a child, but actually desiring one. There is already plenty of evidence that children of unintended pregnancies fare worse in life on a bunch of measures, and with unintended pregnancy rate over 40%, that could well overwhelm any effect they are trying to measure.

It may not seem to "add up" in the intuitive sense, but the post you replied to does answer your question. We could speculate that "some form of stigma" wasn't enough to seriously impact the figure for happiness, or we could speculate that the survey had some kind of deficit of quality. I like it here so far: Better stories, less "politicizing" (shit makes me ill, as there's NO ANSWERS when Corporation & state NEED to be separated as the SOLUTION (it works vs. fascism) like Church & state were).

That crap's depressing AND the province of parasites & screwups that ONLY do it to further their OWN personal agendas, & are screwing up the planet, daily - removing our constitutional rights even ("Free Speech Zones"? WTF?? The whole NATION is one for Pete's sake!).

Here though? I see more of the GOOD things folks do in Comp. Sci., engineering, & other sciences here!

Which tends to 'brighten my day' seeing news like THAT (sort of like the failed psychological manipulation facebook experiment lately, except in reverse, AND "self-administered" by myself ON myself, coming here more than /. since it's become a SOCKPUPPET riddled wreckage for carpet bombing donwmodding others & the home of ac trolls (miserable scum that they are) with their "hit & run" unjustifiable downmods...).

        ---

It's also 'courtesy of "yours truly", GOING TO GET EVEN BETTER HERE w/ help from The Mighty Buzzard who looks to be implementing it here soon -> http://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?sid=2790&threshold=-1&commentsort=0&mode=improvedthreaded&cid=66024 [soylentnews.org] )

Well... not really "MY ORIGINAL IDEA" though!

I.E.-> I've seen it on UBB forums boards for decades.

Yes - it just works & is FAIR (unlike slashcode on SLASHDOT: Which speaks WORLDS of its designers - weasels imo. Why? They have FORGOTTEN "their ghost is in the machine" of their code, their character... leaving the ability to sockpuppet and downmod via that bogus method?? Speaks WORLDS of their characters I am sorry to say...!)

        I.E.-> The feature is simple:

The ability to ID a downmodding detractor etc. so folks can assist the moderation staff + also POLICE THEMSELVES via peers noting who is doing WHAT around here in "trolling"!

(The province of TRULY cowardly SCUM online and yes, in life) via the fair ability to confront a detractor who doesn't justify their b.s. downmods too & is ONLY fair, evening the playing field taking away the "advantage" sockpuppeteers on /. have)

Yes - there are TONS of sockpuppeteers there (for downmodding their opponents when they cannot logically & factually disprove their points on validly)!

        ---

Hey - I've literally caught a few red-handed & even an advertiser PROJECTING CLEARLY he's doing it there recently in raymorris of ClickBank/Vertis putting down hosts & making HUGE tech mistakes on Linux vs. Windows too -> http://it.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=5351503&cid=47381099 [slashdot.org]

Yes, using "admen tactics" in "jump on the bandwagon" psych tactics putting down hosts, which I confronted him on NICELY @ first, & he downmodded a DOZEN times which oddly, he PROJECTED he knows downmods HIDE posts - especially on hosts as he literally stated!

(Sockpuppet users which I can produce LARGE BODIES of evidences of advertisers using mind you as well)

        Result?

RayMorris ran from disproving my valid points on hosts... every SINGLE time!

That is, UNTIL I "busted him" on the FACT he is an advertiser & exposed him in it, getting him to tip his hand AND show his "tell" basically - reactions say it all:

He ignored me A DOZEN TIMES++ & downmodded me UNTIL that happened, lol!

I.E./E.G.-> He said "nobody wants to read about hosts" - using everyone/noone/everybody/nobody was what tipped me off, it's a marketing tactic "get on the bandwagon" b.s. & a MIND game only!

(Whereas, literally - I can show hundreds of posts in upmods of mine AND quotes of folks like YOU provign otherwise on /. no less as CONCRETE, verifiable & UNDENIABLE facts, vs. his clear FEAR of hosts being projected there and in his downmods of my challenges, completely fair to disprove my points on hosts validly with facts, which he CANNOT - heck, nobody can - it's truth & fact, host ARE the way of the future vs. threats of all kinds online, more speed, security, reliability, AND anonymity to an extent only on the latter, period).

        ---

(Long & Short - /., has gone to hell, putting it quite simply & being as forthright as I can about it there... & partially due to scum that are advertisers or those fronting a PERSONAL AGENDA that benefits ONLY them... whereas by way of comparison? I do what I do, for free, for the ABSOLUTE GOOD of all by - yes, even ADMEN can benefit by hosts usage...)

Hey... even courts of law allow it, for example as far as CONFRONTING & IDENTIFYING a detractor/accuser (regarding sockpuppeteering downmodders especially).

The mods here & devs also seem actually CONCERNED about it here too (The Mighty Buzzard who replied there), vs. /. where they do NOT give a damn period @ all imo & yes, decade of experience there... place has gone way, Way, WAY DOWNHILL, no doubt about it - especially on the grounds noted above).

        ---

Blows my mind about slashdot though (per my "ghost in the machine" comment above):

See - despite their "mantra" & liberal agenda line of b.s. (which don't get me wrong, I am ALL for free speech) of "Freedom of Speech" = GOOD there?

They are the BIGGEST ABUSERS OF IT, bar-none, that I have *EVER* seen online & I've been hitting forums & IRC since, oh, 1994 regularly daily (I like learning & discussing things, albeit MOSTLY based on facts though not abstracts & unprovables that are mere speculations)

From /.'s perspective, as webmasters - which I DO *try* to understand but DO NOT LIKE nefarious manipulation & underhanded means to do so from wannabe CLEVER sneaks?

Hey... makes sense too (from their perspective - get folks pissed, trying to defend themselves? They will post & view more... That's the SNEAK's method, ala SunTzu almost - take advantage of the nature of the "opponent" albeit in THIS case?? The users themselves... human nature IS to defend yourself, self-preservation & ego/what not).

STILL - They don't get SHIT out of me that way though, due to hosts & this program of mine (shears all that crap off, ads & trackers, & what it can't handle (minimal) I have a firewall ruleset that does, perfectly (vs. IP address served trackers) -> http://start64.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5851:apk-hosts-file-engine-64bit-version&catid=26:64bit-security-software&Itemid=74 [start64.com]

        Now, on that LAST note?

        You *may* like this:

        APK Hosts File Engine 9.0++ 32/64-bit http://soylentnews.org/comments.pl?sid=2790&threshold=-1&commentsort=0&mode=improvedthreaded&cid=66024 [soylentnews.org]

I note that "shameless plug", since you note you use hosts!

All I can say is GIVE THAT PROGRAM A SHOT - it is, clearly, the BEST OF ITS KIND (recommended as such by MalwareBytes' hpHosts @ the top of their page -> http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download [hosts-file.net]

Doing MORE with less vs. ALL forms of "competitors" via smaller code & a FASTER level of operations (kernelmode vs. usermode) + 64 bit too, not only 32-bit mind you, & is PORTABLE with a single file design that is multithreaded using hand written code, not DB engines (like hostsman it's nearest competitor in features that has LESS features than mine too) & is 1/2 the SIZE of hostsman to boot).

It imports, sorts, deduplicates & normalizes the import data to the smallest & MOST efficient form there is (far more efficient than AdBlock which is crippled by default, does FAR less & yet uses more "moving parts" complexity + room for breakdown with LESS end user direct control FAR LESS EFFICIENTLY than hosts in RAM, CPU, messagepassing overheads, + other forms of resources (I/O mainly) than hosts does, by a LONG shot -> 4++gb extra in FireFox https://blog.mozilla.org/nnethercote/2014/05/14/adblock-pluss-effect-on-firefoxs-memory-usage/ [mozilla.org] )

        APK

P.S.=> IN the end/bottom-line? Thanks for the "welcome", it's appreciated!

        Plus?

Hey, & enjoy the program SHOULD you elect to try it too, as it's free, no strings attached, & no tracking etc. b.s involved!

(AND, of course - it works BETTER THAN ANYTHING ELSE OUT THERE for what it does adding speed, security, reliability, & even anonymity like NO other single browser addon can, + it shores up DNS redirect security deficiencies with DIRECT end user control)

So much so, that when Wladimir Palant of "Almost ALL Ads Blocked" (lol) wrote me 1st mind you, saying "hosts are a shitty solution", AND I REPLIED challenging him to PROVE adblock can do MORE than hosts and more efficiently, from 2 diff. email accounts I used in reply?

Man - HE OUTRIGHT RAN... so much for him!

Heck, even Aryeh Goretsky of NOD32/ESET won't take that challenge also!

(Albeit, I was nice to him though, he never gave me any guff like Palant did)

Especially since SYMANTEC/NORTON even ADMITTED recently their antivirus is ONLY 55% effective -> http://it.slashdot.org/story/14/05/06/1343210/anti-virus-is-dead-but-still-makes-money-says-symantec [slashdot.org]

I hadn't heard of APK before but I'm quite taken with this bombastic character. I broadly agree with the technical and social points raised. I'm already on record regarding a /etc/hosts blocklist [soylentnews.org]. I am wholly unimpressed that I have to install a series of plugins, each with its own attack surface and agenda, and then bolster the ediface with a blacklist. And I am particularly unimpressed that parties who author plugins, such as AdBlock, deliberately allow advertising through as part of a financial arrangement.

I don't think many people are aware that, for example, Adobe Flash has access to a user's clipboard and none of Java's restrictions when accessing URLs. Furthermore, cursory inspection of Flash is hindered by bit alignment of tokens and, anyhow, there is no financial incentive decline advertisers. Therefore, anything copied and pasted is available to any rouge advertiser. Despite having multiple levels of protection, I am disgusted that the stuff getting through can use my resources against me. Feel free to advertize random crap to me but to upload a chunk of my wordprocessing while doing so is a step too far.

I am wholly unsurprised that anti-virus software is 55% effective against malware. Anti-virus definitions are about three days behind attacks and they are ineffective against scripting languages, such as JavaScript and Lua (used in Flame). Furthermore, polymorphic viruses have now taken to encrypting themselves and discarding the key. That means a virus has to crack itself to expose its own payload. The proof-of-concept used an 8 bit key but this could be expanded to 16 bits or more. And when payloads are obscured by any number of weak encryption algorithms, it becomes almost impossible for anti-virus software to find malicious code.

I love women (lol, especially in bed) - they make YOU a better man, when you FIND THE RIGHT ONE (the hard part since folks change along the way, often going separate ways "ideologically" is what I've found, & what anyone I KNOW who divorced told me, along with "it's work" which always "BOGGLED MY MIND" until I finally asked an older guy wtf he meant by that since I told him that was a CONSTANT from those telling me "You did the RIGHT thing by NOT getting married" - he said it's COMPROMISE: You can't always do as you please, and must kowtow to your partner's demands a LOT... I agree, you should though - however, ONLY when it makes sense... & a LOT of the time I see women do things that make NO sense, ala say, if you had a car with a busted transmission AND a busted front fender. Women I've found, IF given a choice of which of the two you could fix only? Would fix the fender since it "looks bad" (dumb, the car is for getting you back & forth to work + groceries etc. really) since they are appearances oriented, whereas a GUY would do the RIGHT THING based on the true need of the car I noted, fix the tranny since it is what helps transmit power to the wheels to get you around)... get it?

She doesn't understand this place @ all. Getting my old Ma to chill out a bit & treat others more respectfully & to attempt to make her persona a bit less abrasive on her end is all... it's that, or, telling her to not come around anymore as I had years ago, for years - which hurts her feelings & I do NOT like doing that to her (even my roommates & best buddy agree, it's NOT me, as I noted & to quit "beating myself up" over it thinking somehow it's MY fault, when even THEY said it's her...) - I don't like hurting my Ma's feelings: She admits she is abrasive and a bad teacher too (for a while until her defense mechanisms "snap back in" after reason fades)... but, it has proven, time & again to be the ONLY solution with her, and allows me peace (& not only me, but other family members did the same before too, not just me).

I've had 1,000's of women (dates "etc.") & nearly EVERY SINGLE ONE was an illogical monster.

This suggests that the problem is YOU, rather than 1,000s of women apparently suffering from this affliction that the rest of us don't recognize. Either that or you had the worst luck imaginable.

Think about it for a moment. Your mother was bad to you, and now you see aspects of her in every woman you date. It's kinda obvious what is happening here.

See subject-line & seriously: Is THAT "the best you got"? Clue - YOU are the one completely off-topic "MOJO CHUMP"... care to debate that?

            * I also find it "extremely odd" (lol, not) how only after YOU show up that my +2 interesting rated post gets a -1 OFF TOPIC downmod (when I was on topic completely & YOU BY WAY OF COMPARISON, are not...).

(On luck? Hey - See my p.s., only thing is?? It's NOT luck - it skill/game, & yes, naturally good looks. Wins, every time & I thank God for it. I don't have to think a thing when the results were as much & as many women as I ever needed or wanted, pretty much anytime I wanted. I can't help that, lol!)

            APK

P.S.=> Heck - Apparently on this note your dragging us off topic into, I am FAR from a problem (when I could always, EASILY, "reel in" any woman I ever wanted pretty much - it's as simple as OUT-THINKING & outclassing a puny off-topic illogical failing ad hominem attack attempting little CLOWN, like you... lol!)... apk
