An Arizona minister mistook a photoshopped parody of a 1965 suntan lotion ad for a real ad promoting birth control, then used it as the basis for a controversial sermon about how "the birth control movement" is destroying the US. The ad featured wholesome Disney star Annette Funicello who, ironically, was actually pregnant (and married) when she appeared in the original ad. On the one-year anniversary of her death, the minister's mistake resulted in an erroneous summation of his sermon appearing whenever you searched Google News for Annette Funicello, along with the headline "Childless women on birth control have destroyed the U.S."

Yep, that's what it was. Destroyed America. That and Lassie. Lassie and Ol' Yeller. Ol' Yeller and Reagan, and John Wayne. John Wayne and John Wayne Bobbit. And now we are back to beach blanket bingo, only someone lost. And what, I ask, is the common element in all this America destroying? Yes, Nazi sympathizer Disney. His head is frozen and stored somewhere, you know. He's coming back. Do you believe in fairies?

What amazes me is how frequently America has apparently been destroyed without me noticing. You would think I would notice the destruction of the country that I live in.

Depends on where you live. I don't expect to notice when everything west of the San Andreas fault falls off into the pacific ocean.
More seriously: Most of the destruction is sourced internal to the person. The failing fabric of the country is the rotting of the people not bombs and bulldozers. Eek, that sounds preachy, lets try this, to many people blame others instead of owning up to what is their own stupid fault. Most people have their own favorite thing to blame all the worlds woes on and they are loud and alarmist about it.

What's sad/amazing about this is that thinking that Annette Funicello might in any context be considered "a whore" is not the most ignorant thing about this guy.
That being said, I think I now need to watch Back to the Beach [imdb.com] this weekend. If having Frankie & Annete ( & Connie), Steevie Ray Vaughan, Dick Dale, Gilligan & the Skipper, Don Adams, Fishbone, and Pee-wee Herman in the same movie is wrong, then I don want to be right.

Because it is a humorous example of the intersection between tech and human nature.
We would all be better off if we learned to be less credulous about 'evidence' that confirms our most deeply held beliefs. It is easy to doubt something you disagree with, it takes intellectual rigor to doubt something you agree with. Think of it as a lesson for anyone posting on an internet discussion board.
FWIW, the last time I got caught in such a trick was when I fell for the story that "Mitt" in "Mitt Romney" was short for "Mittens" [thewire.com] - it confirmed all my "Biff and Muffy at the country club" stereotypes so I just took it at face value.
