CNN reports that:

A doctor who has played a key role in fighting the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone is infected with the disease, according to that country's Ministry of Health. Dr.Sheik Humarr Khan is being treated by the French aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres also known as Doctors Without Borders in Kailahun, Sierra Leone, Tim Shenk, an agency spokesman, told CNN.

Until falling ill, Khan had been overseeing Ebola treatment and isolation units at Kenema Government Hospital, about 185 miles east of the capital Freetown.

Citing patient confidentiality, Shenk declined to provide additional details about Khan's condition.

I'm reluctant to discuss a person's confidential medical condition. However, this is a matter of public interest.

Since submitting this article, I discovered that a Liberian civil servant died after flying to Nigeria [bbc.co.uk].

A doctor who ... is infected with the disease,

    Never mind, he'll regenerate

In other news the outbreak has spread to Lagos, Nigeria. [bbc.co.uk] He arrived through Lagos airport. There's also a breakout in Freetown. Freetown has a handful of direct flights to Europe, and Lagos has a ton, as well as direct flights to New York, Atlanta and Houston.

Fatality from this strain of ebola so far is 60%.

This reminds me of that movie with the infected monkey...

It could be considered interesting to the public, sure, but that's not the same thing as "in the public interest". Someone in close contact to infected parties became infected themselves. What good does the public gain from knowing this?

Now if they found that the doctor had been incompetent, or that the virus had been transmitted through a new/unexpected vector, then *that* would be information in the public interest. This? Not so much.

As other commenters have mentioned, the real news is the continuing spread of the outbreak.

I suppose the public interest argument is that it will hamper the treatment of the disease, both through losing this chap, and through others being more fearful.

Question remains - when does Madagascar close its borders.
