Time to dig those old Daikatana jokes folks as its been reported that John Romero is working with a concept artist on a new shooter. While his wife Brenda was concerned with how much he was gonna say John was quoted as revealing "I haven't made a shooter since 2000. So I'm basically starting to work on another one,"

As someone who actually owns his previous "magnum opus" Daikatana...I like it! Sure its bad, but its IMHO a MST3K kind of bad, like "You Are Empty" with its 20 foot tall mutant attack chickens or Soldier Of Fortune 3 with its "bullet grazed enemy becomes a blood fountain". Its bad but entertainingly so. And in a world where a Goat Simulator sells almost a million copies who knows, maybe some old school Romero will find a niche?

Heh. You know, just before Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull went into production, George Lucas must at some point have said: "I haven't made an Indy movie since 1989!" With that idea in mind you can probably imagine the fart noise I made upon hearing of this project.

Come on maaaaannn! It's Romero, and I liked Daikatana, I really don't get the --> amount -- of hate it received! It was a fun game if you like shooters that have a good feel and great graphics for the time.

It was way over hyped. Definitely. But I know Romero can pull off a great shooter just by using the lessons learned from Daik! Every game I've made(No big popular stuff, but cult following sorta) I've learned what NOT to do is the thing to take away from every build. And the little embellishments like impact stars/particles combined with good sound fx to create a feel is the kind of stuff that makes a winner in FPS'.

Like the silenced PPK in Goldeneye 007, awesome silencer sound + satisfying thud/kerplump! when the bullet strikes an enemy, or a good bullet meets metal/wood sound. Personally I loved shooting the alarms in the Dam level. That sound was satisfying as shit!

All of these things must combine to create a great feel for the mechanics.

He did great with Daikatana and I am sure he will impress us with whatever he comes up with now!

Also, Carmacks' RAGE was awesome! I know it was hated on pretty widely too, but it's one of the best FPS' ever made. I just hate the characters and the whole Fallout wannabe style of it but otherwise it's one of my top favorite games. Best gameplay and feel for the game mechanics/sfx ever!

At the present moment I'll bet much more on Romero to make a game rather than Carmack. OculusBook.

From what I remember much of the disdain came from the fact that he was pretty much directly insulting his buyers in marketing. That infamous "Romero's going to make you his bitch" thing. It was also not that great you must admit. Maybe not as bad as the hate would make you think but still pretty bad. People were hoping for Doom but better. They certainly didn't get that.

I guess it's not very inspiring that he felt like specifically mentioning his rustiness but I admit I'm rather optimistic too. I kind of interpreted it from a programmer's standpoint. (e.g. I haven't wrote a compiler in a long time, itching to do it again)

No, most of the disdain comes from the fact that it was immensely hyped, but the game itself is a steaming heap of poo. Kind of the Duke Nukem Forever of its era, except Duke Nukem Forever is better (though that's not saying a lot).

Maybe he could hire the DNF team and make the worst computer game ever?

It was bandwagon hopping IMHO. If you look at the games with an open mind I'd say the biggest thing Romero was guilty of (besides being shite at advertising) is of being overambitious, as what he was trying to do was give us what we take for granted now in many shooters. He wanted the player to feel like part of a bigger story even in SP,to make it more movie like, but with the average hardware at the time being a sub 650MHz P3? The hardware just couldn't support any kind of advanced AI. The other problem for Daikatana is that Half Life came out and raised the hell out of the bar so by the time Daikatana came out one needed much more fleshed out worlds than what came before half Life.

That said those were truly the golden years of shooters, before the budgets got so large that devs were afraid to do anything but blindly follow trends for fear of going under. In that "Quake 2 Engine" period one could try new things, from the GHOUL physics to Soldier Of Fortune to comedy in No Ones Lives Forever, when everybody used the same engine one had to find other ways to stand out.

Is John Romero or John Carmack still relevant any more.?
I am old enough to play the original Doom when it came out, but these guys haven't done anything worth while for so long.

No. I'm sorry, but just... no. It's not 'so bad it's good', it's definitely 'so bad it's bad'. Half the game seems to consist of shooting mosquitoes, and the other half of trying to lead retarded AIs around the map.
