http://www.wired.com/2014/08/federal-cybersecurity-director-guilty-child-porn-charges/

"...As the acting cybersecurity chief of a federal agency, Timothy DeFoggi should have been well versed in the digital footprints users leave behind online when they visit web sites and download images.

But DeFoggi—convicted today in Nebraska on three child porn charges including conspiracy to solicit and distribute child porn—must have believed his use of the Tor anonymizing network shielded him from federal investigators.

He’s the sixth suspect to make this mistake in Operation Torpedo, an FBI operation that targeted three Tor-based child porn sites and that used controversial methods to unmask anonymized users.

But DeFoggi’s conviction is perhaps more surprising than others owing to the fact that he worked at one time as the acting cybersecurity director of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. DeFoggi worked for the department from 2008 until January this year...."

See? His conviction is proof that everybody in the government are good guys, that you can totally trust them to do the right thing. All the information they collect about you via total surveillance is in good hands. Because they caught the one bad guy and everyone else is completely pure hearted.

No. It shows that the whole society is rotten, and to cure we need even more surveillance. I's propose a webcam with spy-interface in every room, especially in children-bedrooms and bathrooms. Maybe it would be possible to build them into the toilet-seat (pointing up, not down), we could give access to DHS to let them constantly check the private parts for signs of physical abuse. Wouldn't you all feel much safer?

Oh lord do I know about that, one of the reasons I got out of doing corporate was how pants wettingly retarded middle management types were, I even had a buddy who ended up having to go over his boss's head after being threatened with firing because he wouldn't let the boss have his attachments from Melissa [wikipedia.org].

Now that said I'll get hate for saying this but I really have mixed feelings when it comes to these busts. From reading TFA it looks like this time they may have caught an actual predator but from my talks with a friend in the state crime lab that is FAR, way fucking far, from the norm. In reality what they catch is a bunch of social retards that wouldn't touch anybody, many of them shut ins with pretty severe mental health issues (as an example one that my friend had to do the analysis on hadn't left his home in nearly 15 years and had to be tranced like an animal to get him out the house. instead of getting the mental treatment he needs we taxpayers will shell out around 30 million to keep him in a box for life) and they can't get the funding to go after the REAL child molesters because that would cross jurisdictions and the prosecutors only care about their careers and want the easy and cheap busts that will get them headlines.

Then of course there is the logical disconnect that arises from the way we have it set up now, where a picture or even just a description of a crime can get you the same time as actually committing the crime itself, and of course how like the 50s red scare we have gotten to the point one doesn't even need actual CP to be busted and lose years of your life, see the guy doing time for a dirty Simpsons cartoon (just FYI if you've seen an ad for dirty cartoons that has a thumbnail of the Simpsons doing something dirty? That can get you 10 years just viewing that as a cached thumbnail equals possession now), the guy that wrote the supposedly "pro pedo" book, which just FYI was a book trying to teach pedos how to control their urges WITHOUT molesting kids, the guy that was collecting Japanese manga comics, there is even a guy doing time for writing his fantasies down in a journal at the request of his therapist. none of those were found to have any actual CP BTW, which in my book makes their imprisonment pure thoughtcrime.

So while I can understand the desire to make this a black and white issue, hell i felt the same way before having many lunches with a member of law enforcement who dealt with this every day, its really pretty far from it. Porn addiction is real, social retardation is real, and those people should be seeing shrinks NOT spending decades in boxes at taxpayer expense, and this whole thing gives those seeking higher office an easy and cheap way to grab headlines and grab the votes of soccer moms while ignoring the root problem, the ability to set up servers in some idontgiveafuckistan combined the global problem of human trafficking. I'm all for getting those that prey upon children but talking to my friend I have to wonder if this just isn't the right way to go about it, like grabbing the junkie on the corner while ignoring the drug cartel making the dope.

"in November 2012 continued to operate his child porn sites secretly from a federal facility in Omaha for several weeks before shutting them down. During this time, they monitored the private communications "

"The malware that investigators installed remotely on the machines of visitors to PedoBook and McGrath’s other sites was designed to identify the computer’s IP address as well as its MAC address and other identifiers."

    Conclusions:
      * Booby trap servers (in the software sense)
      * Don't assume the server contents is safe, thus P2P encryption for chats etc
      * Avoid Microsoft software
      * Use virtual environments which has no leads to any real identity whatsoever
      * Assume the protected network is fully compromised at all times

    Did I miss anything?

(I don't care for child porn but find this cat-and-mouse chess interesting from a security point of view)

Let's be honest, no one cares for child porn and the ones that do aren't talking about it. We don't even know if this guy cares for it because of the sheer amount of "TEH CHILD PORN TERRORISTS THINK OF THE CHILDREN" crap being thrown around, and if he does then this is a very good example of what happens when you start doing this despicable hysteria creating. It dilutes real cases of abuse. But in any case by booby trap I would assume you mean run a honeypot on it. If that isn't what you mean then perhaps add it to the list. Not sure if honeyd is still maintained but if it is that would be a good candidate. Could give a bit more insight into what attack vectors their stuff looks for.

Tell me when they do anything about the NSA intercepting and sharing teen sexts, or those pentagon officials who got investigated for trading actual CP. Or is that just a perk of the job?
