PapayaSF and AnonTechie write in with 2 stories which seem to be linked. The first is the leak of nude and personal photographs of celebrities, and the second is perhaps the flaw that allowed someone to access the photographs.

Stars Exposed in Massive Nude Photo Leak

Nude celebrities, bitcoins, and Apple: it's a story seemingly designed to stir up the entire internet. Scores of private photos of celebrities such as Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Kirsten Dunst, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead have been leaked (allegedly from Apple's iCloud), and posted on 4chan in exchange for bitcoins. A list of 100+ names has appeared, but pictures have not yet appeared for many names on the list (including Kate Bosworth, Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, and Kaley Cuoco). Victoria Justice claims the photos of her are fake. Twitter accounts are being shut down. The story is still developing, so grab your popcorn.

This could be the Apple iCloud flaw that led to celebrity photos being leaked.

An alleged breach in Apple’s iCloud service may be to blame for countless leaks of private celebrity photos this week.

On Monday, a Python script emerged on Github (which we’re not linking to as there is evidence a fix by Apple is not fully rolled out) that appears to have allowed malicious users to ‘brute force’ a target account’s password on Apple’s iCloud, thanks to a vulnerability in the Find my iPhone service. Brute force attacks are where a malicious user uses a script to repeatedly guess passwords to attempt to discover the correct one.

The vulnerability allegedly discovered in the Find my iPhone service appears to have allowed attackers to use this method to guess passwords repeatedly without any sort of lockout or alert to the target. Once the password has been eventually matched, the attacker can then use it to access other iCloud functions freely.

Reddit Bans Page Where Celebrity Nude Photos were Shared 29 comments

Reddit has closed the board that became a hub for the leaked nude photos of Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Upton and other celebrities.

The massive celebrity photo leak originated on image-sharing site 4chan, but a Reddit page called “r/thefappening” quickly became a heavily trafficked page where users were sharing links to the stolen pictures.

Reddit CEO Yishan Wong, in a post entitled “Every Man is Responsible for His Own Soul” on the Reddit blog, explained the site’s reasoning.

[…]

Reddit systems administrator Jason Harvey, also known by his Reddit username alienth, gave further explanation of the decision, along with providing a rundown of what happened after the massive leak. “The situation we had in our hands was the following: These subreddits were of course the focal point for the sharing of these stolen photos,” Harvey wrote. “The images which were DMCAd were continually being reposted constantly on the subreddit. We would takedown images (thumbnails) in response to those DMCAs, but it quickly devolved into a game of whack-a-mole. We’d execute a takedown, someone would adjust, reupload, and then repeat. This same practice was occurring with the underage photos, requiring our constant intervention.” “It became obvious that we were either going to have to watch these subreddits constantly, or shut them down. We chose the latter. It’s obviously not going to solve the problem entirely, but it will at least mitigate the constant issues we were facing. This was an extreme circumstance, and we used the best judgement we could in response.”

What do SN denizens make of all this?

Hacker sentenced to prison for role in Jennifer Lawrence nude photo theft

A hacker was sentenced to eight months in prison on Wednesday for a scheme that exposed intimate photos of the actor Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities.

George Garofano, 26, was accused of illegally hacking the private Apple iCloud accounts of 240 people, including Hollywood stars as well as average internet users, allowing their nude photos and private information to be spread around the internet.

He was one of four people charged in the 2014 hacking scandal, in which private photos of Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst and others were published online. Lawrence said at the time the invasion was equivalent to a sex crime, and called for tougher laws.

A federal judge at a US district court in Bridgeport, Connecticut, ordered Garofano to serve the prison term followed by three years of supervised release.

I fail to see the point. You are already on the internet, you can see people fucking left right and center. Doing all the stuff you like, and some that you don't. All in 4k quality etc etc. What is so special about seeing some blurry cellphone celeb boob or cunt? I promise you that they look more or less the same as all the other boobs and cunts out there. Not much difference really. Sure the shape and size and stuff might alter slightly here and there. But it's not something amazing never before seen stuff.

That said tho. Whyyyyyy do people keep doing this? It's not the first time celeb nudies leak online. If you don't know how technology works. Please don't use it.

Also will Apple get sued now? For their apparently lacking security.

You've thrown down the gauntlet with the bacon thing, and the ultimate way to cook bacon is on a wire rack in the oven for like 20 minutes at 400 or so. You have to keep a really close eye on it toward the end as the difference between undercooked and burned is like 120 seconds.

I gave up on both the frying pan and the microwave for bacon once I mastered the oven technique.

Next step - use an overclocked cryptocurrency rig to cook your bacon: at least you'll derive some secondary benefits and look nerdier.

          End notes:
          * you see, the 400K is not nearly enough for a crispy bacon. Hand over your nerd card if you use other temperature scale.
          * 20 min on my 3kW fan forced electric oven is a waste, no matter how perfectly the bacon cooks. I'd try an electron gun for a precise energy transfer, but the bremsstrahlung would kill me.

I saw those pix on 4chan last night or the night before or whatever it was, and I was unimpressed... without a team of makeup artists and extensive photoshopping some of those women don't look as good as expected... can see some better stuff on /r/gonewild and a zillion other places any time. ms diggity whatever-her-name-is, just some random amateur chick on reddit, looks better than all of the celebrities. Don't get me wrong, solid 8/10 or better, I'd look if they walked by me in the hallway, but my reaction to the pix was "eh".

/b/ being its usual /b/, "some" of the supposed pix are certain to be photoshops of the actress on someone elses body.

Not having an iphone, I'm surprised iphones can't take video and/or chicks that are supposedly snap-happy camera pix takers in pix mode aren't making hot videos. This is reason #2 I think some (many?) are fakes. Where's the hot sexting logs and emails and videos and just random no pr0n pix.

It sounds like typical trolling, and in a couple days we'll see all kinds of funny posts with collections of headlines of media that got fooled.

There are "superfans" or whatever you call them on 4chan and reddit that can identify pr0n stars based on only small closeups of fun body parts, and I bet if they got to work we'd figure out who got photoshopped onto who's head. I have to say whoever is in the supposedly Ariana Grande over the shoulder pix, celebrity or not, is the most amazing pix of the bunch I saw, or rephrased, whoever that is, she should be famous.

      "just random no pr0n pix"

Here's another missing pix example I just thought of. Where's the drug use pix? And don't go telling me all of these chicks and all their friends "just say no to drugs". Not to mention hangovers. Of course those might be for sale to the highest (LOL) bidder and not public yet.

And has anyone checked the metadata to make sure its realistic, I'd LOL if this supposed iDevice hack has pix taken with android phones or at the GPS coordinates of pr0n studios using pro camera gear.

Finally an analysis of metadata would be interesting. Are celebrities taking pix of each other and if so, who is hooking up with who? Might be plenty of scandal there.

It'll go on all week because somebody seems to be dripfeeding content, with promises of more in the future.

Usually that means they're trying to maximise publicity or income. No group has owned up to it yet and there's been no publicised way to get in contact with the owners to offer them money, so we have yet to see whether there's any underlying plan here. I'm interested to see whether they're going to try to sell exclusives to "news" companies, or set up a kickstarter-style effort (every x bitcoin that arrives in this wallet means a new pic!) or whether it's truly just for the lulz.

How this plays out will probably be a lot more interesting than the pictures themselves.

"What I find funny is all the people who act like their shit don't stink"

I'm with nyder on this 100%. Its exactly like how if you want to find gay congressmen you look for the loudest homophobic republican and I guarantee that type is getting pounded in the ole docking port every night by some other dude or swapped positions, even worse often just a kid not adult.

When I was in the Army it was the same way, loud homophobic speech was repeatedly demonstrated to be a homo mating call, the louder two guys were about hating gays, the more likely you'd catch the two of them together with their pants down.

And they never take well to having this pointed out or laughing at them, however funny the situation.

Being a straight guy I don't entirely understand, but I think its along the lines of going way overboard on an attempt to camouflage such that you find the most camouflaged dude in the group, you Know exactly what he's up to and trying to hide/distract. I'm certain that the louder the complainer about the nudes, the more likely they got them open in another tab at the instant they're typing.

I am not one of those guys who hunts for the Kim Kardashian sex tape or that sort of thing. I once ran IT for a major awards show and interacted with a whole bunch of celebrities in the after-party, and boy did it take the shine off that entire class of human. I found them intensely boring and narcissistic. Stands to reason, right?

But I did look these up out of curiosity to see if they were real, ie., "cloud" computing is generally unsafe and something like this could happen, but it could also have been faked as part of a viral marketing campaign for something. My impression of the videos and stills is that they are genuine, because they contain human moments I have witnessed many times with the women in my life. The shots where they're holding their breasts with a pouty face, because they think they're flawed somehow. The casual nudity of a lazy afternoon in bed. The shots of them trying on different bathing suits in a dressing room for their boyfriend's opinion. So ultimately I didn't find them titillating but human. As such, there's not a whole lot for any of them to be ashamed of, especially when you consider that they are exhibitionists by nature, being models and actresses.

Perhaps that demystification is the biggest offense, in their minds. They like to weave a mystique around themselves that has a direct connection to their paychecks. Being revealed as merely human, without makeup on, trying on a bikini that makes her tummy look saggy, might hurt their bottom line.

Absolutely right, this is demystification - human beings in being human shocker. It cuts through the mythos and aura of being a celebrity, but we base entire newspapers around that now, so it's nothing new.

There's an Ars article [arstechnica.com] that surprised me in just how preachy and puritanical it was. It takes the attitude that "well, you shouldn't take naked photos on your phone".

Why? Because cloud services (unless you use something like Tarsnap) are inherently flawed? Surely that's a criticism of the services themselves, not how people use them.

We expect celebrities to be perfect, and when they aren't it's sprawled across the gutter press for our own titillation or righteous indignation. The whole circus is pathetic.

You wrote all that about how these photos prove that these woman are humans just like any other woman, but then your conclusion is some hardcore objectification rather than the obvious conclusion that, just like any other human, they don't like losing control of their private lives. That just like anyone else who were to have photos of them at their most intimate and unguarded shown to the rest of the world, they are unhappy with the simple fact that someone took something close and personal from them without their permission.

I've never heard of imagur before but after this I decided to have a look. According to this [imgur.com] it's been happening on the so-called deep web for years, but few knew about it and you needed original pics to "buy in". That would explain why no-one seems to have all the pics and why some of the celebs are confused because the pics got deleted years ago.
