The BBC is reporting that Samsung are to pull out of selling laptops (including Chromebooks) in Europe.

Samsung has announced that it is ending sales of its laptop computers in Europe.

The move includes its Chromebook model, which had previously been one of the category's best-sellers.

The South Korean company's decision follows Sony's announcement earlier this year that it was selling its Vaio division and pulling out of PC sales altogether.

Samsung signalled it might consider similar action in other parts of the globe.

"We quickly adapt to market needs and demands," said the company in a statement.

Is this just them proactively avoiding the upcoming collapse of the Chromebook market? Are people finally done with the Chromebook fad?

I wouldn't be surprised if some people bought them not realizing that they're kind of half-assed laptops that pretty much require internet connectivity. And other people probably bought them realizing the limitations, but not realizing just how limiting those limitations actually are in practice.

The tablet market has already collapsed for everybody but Apple. But then again, they're not really selling tablets, but rather they're selling luxury status symbols. Everyone else who tried to sell a utility-driven tablet has had little to no luck in the market. People just don't need crippled devices like tablets and Chromebooks, I think.

Samsung probably gets much better margins on Galaxy phones, tablets and PHABLETS.

This is a case of consolidation by surrender.

It has declined [reuters.com], but it remains around 15% [techpinions.com].

Samsung Electronics doesn't seem to report [wsj.com] notebook margins. The best I could find was a bill of materials [9to5google.com] of $332.12-$344.32 for a $429-499 2011 Chromebook.

I'd be surprised if ten years from now we look back and decide Chromebooks were a fad. I'm as hardcore geek as anyone, and I've bought a chromebook and like it a lot. I'm not happy about being tied into Google's ecosystem, and it doesn't meet all my needs. But it's surprisingly good at a hell of a lot of stuff.

The next step is going to be Google somehow consolidating Android and Chrome - we'll see how that goes. And maybe that will be surpassed by some other, similar, system. But I personally think the market is heading in the direction Chrome is, and it will be anything but a fad. You might be looking at the future, whether you like it or not.

Fuck beta, fuck systemD and fuck Samsung!

Fuck them for building self-shooting robots for the Korean DMZ, fuck them for their business practice of copying innovations, fuck them for then dumping cheap crap on the market to push the innovators out, and fuck them for bringing down Pioneer. Fuck them for their shitty cheap OS knockoffs, fuck them for horrible customer experience, fuck them for terrible support, fuck them for making me work with their shit because some of my clients thought they are a "good brand," and fuck them for being a profit --instead of value-oriented-- company.
