The 5th World Maker Faire ran in New York a few days ago (Sept 20 & 21) , and there's a bundle of videos of interesting bits and pieces up on the Maker Faire Youtube channel and at the Makezine site and the main maker faire site.

Part science fair, part county fair, and part something entirely new, Maker Faire is an all-ages gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students, and commercial exhibitors. All of these “makers” come to Maker Faire to show what they have made and to share what they have learned.

Tons of cool stuff.

Let's hope it's not just 3d-printers all over. Who's coming?

I actually prefer the Detroit Maker Faire over the NY (world) Maker Faire. NY was very commercialized. Most of the booths were there representing a company. Detroit was mostly booths from hackers and college students. I was going to these things pre-Arduino UNO and pre-rPI when most 3D printers were RepRap style and not professional at all (Bre Pettis wasn't yet hated). Depends if you like polished gadgets you can buy or to see one-off gadgets someone else built for fun.

but the Shapeoko booth fell through. Maybe next year.
