Although we are late in reporting the fact, within days of announcing the demise of Bodhi Linux it is announced that the distro will continue on as the torch has been passed on to other volunteers. Distrowatch has again added it to their Distro Ranking List and lists Bodhi's page as being in "active" development.

As the handing-over maintainer, Jeff, says:

Bodhi 3 will happen at some point, but they don't have any firm time lines right now. Thankfully - all the delays mean E19 "stable" has been released and will be the default desktop for the x86/64bit releases. I'll let the new folks post updates once they get all my build scripts sorted and start getting pre-releases out to test.

Bodhi Linux's Founder is Back 6 comments

Bodhi is one of a tiny number of distros which use the Enlightenment desktop by default, the other that I can think of being Elive. ("Bodhi" is Sanscrit for "Enlightenment", BTW.) Bodhi is Ubuntu-based and was created by college student Jeff Hoogland.

Having completed grad school and entered the working world, Jeff found he was stretched a bit thin, so, in the Summer of 2014, he stepped away from the helm of his creation. As he revealed in his interview with Christine Hall earlier this month

My wife and I recently purchased our first home, our eleven month old son is happy and healthy, and we are expecting our second child this summer.

Christine now reports from FOSS Force

He posted a notice of his return to Bodhi yesterday on his blog, Thoughts on Technology.

"Today I am happy to share that I am returning [to Bodhi] in my full capacity as project manager/lead developer and I come bearing gifts!"

The gifts consisted of "reloaded" release candidates of the upcoming 3.0.0 version of Bodhi in both 32 and 64 bit versions.

"Over the past couple of weeks I have re-familiarized myself with what has been going on in the land of Enlightenment and cleaning up the Bodhi build scripts".

Oh, and "Bodhi" is Sanskrit for "Enlightenment" (not coincidently, the name of the desktop environment used by Bodhi Linux).

If you want to make a comparison of the quality of the work done, Elive is another distro built around Enlightenment.
(It was once payware for the latest binaries, but is now gratis and libre at all levels.)

      About Jeff Hoogland:
He created the Bodhi Linux distro when he was 20 years old.
He now has his sheepskin and a young bride and a child and is having to figure out how to make a living in an economy that continues to collapse, so he is having to reevaluate how he uses his time.

I don't run it currently, but I always enjoyed Bodhi Linux when I did, and I thought it was the best implementation of E17 out there. I'm glad to see it's not going to die off. I do wish it was based on Debian instead of Ubuntu, but no distro is perfect. ;)

I'd not heard of Bodhi Linux before this, but it looks interesting.

It also looks like a distro I could use on one of my older laptops.

Never heard of it but If Bodhi isn't going to use systemd I'll have to check it out.

Since it's based on Ubuntu, I bet it's probably going to be using Systemd soon if it isn't already...

You'll want to stick with the current version and watch updates carefully, then. Unless things change under the new leadership, it is based on Ubuntu LTS and offers a "semi-rolling" release schedule. systemd might just end up getting rolled out to it in the near future. It certainly will in the next Ubuntu LTS release (again, assuming Bodhi stays with Ubuntu).

I really hope they do find a different base distro, and hopefully one without systemd. If not, it will remain on my "testing in a VM only" list of distros.
