The New York Times reports:

EBay said on Tuesday that it would spin off its PayPal payments unit into a separate publicly traded company, taking a step the activist hedge fund magnate Carl C. Icahn first demanded nine months ago.

The move will cleave eBay almost in half, separating it from the payments processor it acquired 12 years ago and built into a giant that generates almost half of the company’s revenue.

The spinoff is expected to be completed in the second half of 2015.

Much of the reason that Paypal sucks is that it does not have to follow the same rules as a real bank. For that to change, you need to hope for new legislation, not a corporate merger or split.

The few of those paypalsucks I looked at appeared very much to be PEBKAC.

Uhhhh...sorry but the reason paypal is sooo hated is because eBay changed the rules so heavily in favor of the buyer its become scamtown. The buyer can get their item and send a brick back in the box and get their money back with ZERO way for the seller to do jack shit about it, the sellers can't warn anybody about bad buyers with negative feedback and eBay has frankly never given a single fuck about scammers so are zero help, and anybody that doesn't take their assraping like a bitch is in danger of having paypal freeze their account!

I used to buy constantly from eBay but after seeing friends get positively robbed by eBay I have avoided that site like an STD for ages, and all the nasty shit started when eBay got paypal. Maybe they will fix it when they no longer own paypal but honestly they have burnt so many I don't know if the place is even savable. You look now and all it is is another Chinese storefront, no different than Chinabuye.

I'm not saying paybay isn't fucked, just that the list could be better curated.

the sellers can't warn anybody about bad buyers with negative feedback

I forgot about that, I think we (Australia) actually have legislation about that, however I couldn't find a link. There's certainly feedback from sellers on my account.

How exactly have your friends been "positively robbed" by Ebay? I buy stuff on there now and then, and I've been using the site since 1996 (how many people do you know who have an account that old on there?), and honestly I've only had a couple of bad transactions, and countless perfectly good ones, both buying and selling. I've never had any trouble there as a seller, even when shipping internationally. The biggest problem there, IMO, is just the fees: they're too fucking high, between the final value fee and the Paypal fees. At least they've finally gotten rid of the listing fees mostly. But aside from the high fees for small-time/occasional sellers, I just don't see the problem. Yes, there is a lot of shit from China on there; the Chinese are taking advantage of the international postal agreements which basically force the USPS to subsidize small parcels shipped from China at absurdly low prices. However, if you want to avoid the cheap Chinese junk sold through Ebay, it's easy to click on the "US only" or "North America only" selection boxes to avoid Chinese sellers; I do this frequently.

Also, a word about Paypal fees: they're industry standard. I've looked at other credit card processors, and they all charge the exact same fees, except they want a monthly fee in addition, which Paypal doesn't charge. Unless you're doing some massive volume, you won't find a cheaper way of accepting credit card payments than Paypal (and even PP gives lower fees for high volume merchants, usually matching the competitors).

Finally, I seem to remember Ebay's "nasty shit" (in the form of ever-increasing fees) going on long before Paypal was purchased. Things went downhill when Ebay went public, because that's when they needed to "generate shareholder value", so they jacked up the fees. They didn't buy Paypal until after that as I recall. But still, that's not really being "positively robbed"; if you don't like the fees, you don't have to sell your stuff on Ebay, and there's other sites to buy stuff from, so it's not like Ebay has a monopoly on internet sales. Amazon is frequently a better place to buy things, and of course there's countless smaller websites.

Who said anything about fees? And try spending some time selling tablets and smartphones and get back to me, as eBay has made stealing merchandise practically a career thanks to their anti-seller changes.

But don't take MY word for it, there are probably a dozen "paypalsucks/ebay sucks" style sites...please go check them out. You will notice there is an obvious pattern which is 1.- scammer buys gear, 2.- scammer "returns" a rock in place of the item, 3.- scammer does a chargeback so they get the item AND the cash. There are guys at this very minute making their living doing this shit and since buying paypal ebay has exactly zero fucks to give when it comes to this. This is why so many mom & pop sellers have bailed in the last 5 years to be replaced by huge resellers, because like a large store the huge resellers can just pass on the cost of the scammers to everybody by adding the price of the scammers into their prices.

So while I'm glad you have had good luck so far heed this advice, NEVER sell something on ebay you can't afford to throw away, never. Because sooner or later you WILL be burned by the scammers, unless you just stick to shit that the scammers can't easily turn like housewares and clothes and shit.

Well I'll admit the stuff I've sold has generally been stuff that isn't easily resold, not consumer electronics items like smartphones or tablets, but instead things like auto parts, my old Transformers collection, etc.

So I guess another piece of advice is to avoid selling stuff that scammers go for and which is easily hocked....

Well that explains why you've not had any problems, you've been selling seriously niche items without easy turnover. But again go to any "ebay sucks" or ebay fraud website and you'll see its the same story over and over as the scammers have realized ebay gives nary a fuck about sellers so they can snatch all the easy to turn gear easier than shoplifting and risk free.

No, it will be able to suck independently of ebay. paypal was finding that ebay wasn't really trying that hard at really sucking, so they decided to go it alone, to really get their suck on.
