Small blue Queensland Police tags are stuck to cement lids covering gas, electricity, telecommunications and water services that open up along some Brisbane footpaths.

Each tag includes a bar code and separate identifying number, and they're placed across joins to access covers, allowing police to quickly see if they've been lifted.

When rulers need such extreme security measures, one has to wonder why is their conscience so heavy.

What have they done wrong to dread their own peoples so much?

Oh no. We all are. That's why we need more police and more monitoring. Because each of us is so special, everyone else needs to be monitored to prevent them from harming us.

And, of course, there are the extra-special politicians.

If I was a terrorist, I'd get a selection of official-looking tags. That way, I could plant a bomb, seal it with a tag and hope that officials would ignore it. Unless those tags are going to be scanned repeatedly, the tag system replaces one security problem with a bigger security hole.

The whole thing is probably just crony-capitalism for the terror-industrial complex.

Sounds like the stickers are only good for catching the short-bus terrorists, but I bet they cost a pretty penny.

I would be surprised if this *does not* happen, whether on purpose or even by accident. Many of the footpaths in Brisbane CBD are quite narrow and see a lot of foot traffic. It's not such a bad idea overall though.

Okay, maybe I'm missing something here. The police aren't going around putting up security cameras on every corner to watch people "in case they use a garbage can". They aren't arresting people throwing out garbage for "using a garbage can the wrong way". They aren't putting in RFID readers in the bins to track people who pass by via their bluetooth and wifi fingerprint.

It's a friggin sticker. It's the same thing any goods manufacture does to make sure you didn't fuck around with a jar of pickles! Sure, it isn't 100% effective-- other posts have already posted ways around it using fake stickers and relying on human laziness to not notice. It isn't 100% self-secure either-- other posts have pointed out you can just go around and cut them all to fuck with the cops.

But to me it looks like a well measured, "good enough" security measure. Known attack vector is hiding explosives in large, public containers. If any officer on patrol sees a broken sticker, it's a yellow flag that they should take a closer look-- and officers with barcode scanners on "sticker duty" provide a modicum of auditing and more in-depth eyeballs. It won't catch everyone who would use that attack vector, but then again it's nigh impossible to stop an extremely determined and methodical attacker. It's better than nothing, which would result on calls for heads to roll if anything did happen. And it isn't a massive, privcay-invading, permanent-powers-for-temporary-situations, millions of dollars to contractor friends, military overreaction.

But are they not just 'marking' the juicy targets? As in 'we think if you messed with this it would suck'. Print another sticker and replace it when you are done.

I am not sure what these stickers accomplish. Targeting the very laziest of terrorists?

I live in Brisbane and I think having the G20 summit here is a terrible idea. Brisbane isn't a large city and isn't equipped to deal with the security measures that G20 requires. Last I heard they were ferrying in police from out of state (bad because the laws between states are slightly different and how will interstate police know these differences). I suspect a lot of undertrained/unqualified people will be put on as "security forces" during the event, which isn't good for the people who live in Brisbane and just want to conduct their lives. Not to mention the huge interruption to commerce/business caused by locking down the CBD.

I'm sort of worried that it will be impossible to get any sort of police response outside of the CBD during the event. G20 will probably be a nice free pass for suburban criminals.

In this day and age I don't understand why they can't just have a teleconference. G20 is bad for the city it's hosted in and dangerous for the people living there. Why does it need to have a physical location? The cost of hosting it is astronomical; you could setup the largest, most advanced teleconferencing system ever for 1/10th of the same budget. It just seems a like a lot of big shot politicians trying to show off how awesome and powerful they are to the detriment of the people they are supposed to be representing.
