The Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Justice Department funded the initial research for "rapid DNA" technology, now available for only 250K USD from IntegenX: The RapidHIT represents a major technological leap—testing a DNA sample in a forensics lab normally takes at least two days. The laser-printer-sized device takes only 90 min to generate a DNA profile, check it against a database, and report on whether it found a match.

"The US government will soon test the machine in refugee camps in Turkey and possibly Thailand on families seeking asylum in the United States, according to Chris Miles, manager of the Department of Homeland Security's biometrics program."

The FBI's website says it is "eager to see" rapid DNA in wide use and that it supports the "legislative changes necessary" to make that happen. IntegenX's Heimburger says the FBI is almost finished working with members of Congress on a bill that would give "tens of thousands" of police stations rapid-DNA machines that could search the FBI's system and add arrestees' profiles to it.

Provided it is at least as accurate as before, cutting a two day process down to 90 minutes sounds like a good technological step forward

Why is everything about this organization related to children?

Oh that's right, the FBI likes to remind us all this tech is for child safety and location assistance.

But what we all know is, that this device will now be paid for with tax and installed in every major airport, bus and train station around the world.
It will delay us 90min for now, but the world will be a better place.

Closet pederasts see their own suppressed and deviant psychopathology as existing OUTSIDE themselves.

Thus, the fantasizing baby rapists of the FBI see their mission as "protecting" children as a class - no individual or actual child - from "us".

This story is old news, they have been doing same day DNA testing on old reruns of CSI for years. Quick montage and blamo, they get results.

    .......

Oh, you mean here in the real world. Ok, pretty neato.

last i heard (when they were the size of a xerox machine) it was about $100 to run a single test on these machines.
the (original) purpose of this device is to determine heredity quickly and cheaply. it's going to save us jillions of dollars and hours in processing people for immigration.

however, still no word on whether all sable antelope [wikipedia.org] or reeves's muntjac [wikipedia.org] will return results as being related or if there is a person that would appear to be related to them. ;)

we can only hope our representatives are wise enough to understand the ramifications of giving this technology to law enforcement.

in other words, we are soooo screwed. ;)

Giving technology to law enforcement. . . OMG, you are right. Why is this the case? Should not better information result in more justice? I mean, if cops were Santa Claus ---- Oh, sorry. I see my mistake.

When it is quick and easy, and cheap, you can bet it will be required in order to get drivers license, get a loan, or buy a house.
Maybe even to get a job.

If $locale PD wants one, let them jiggle their budget and buy it themselves. I don't see any reason for the feds to be buying tens of thousands of these things.

      Jiggle their budget?
What world do you live in?
They will just seize your property, sell it off, and buy one with the money.

Don't ever carry more than a thousand on your person. You're obviously a drug dealer to have that much cash, and could have it seized for nothing but suspicion.
