Reuters is reporting that one of the Cuban doctors who was sent to Sierra Leone has been diagnosed with Ebola. The doctor has been in Sierra Leone since October as a member of a group of 165 doctors and nurses that are part of a Cuban team of 256 medical professionals sent to West Africa to treat patients caught up in an epidemic that has infected more than 14,000 people and killed more than 5,000 of them.

In another post, Reuters reported:

The doctor, Felix Baez, 43, cannot recall any mistake in procedure that could have led to him catching the virus from a patient, said Jorge Perez, director of the tropical diseases hospital where Cuban doctors train for their Ebola missions.

Baez is a specialist in internal medicine, with little infectious disease experience. The Cuban doctors and nurses follow the training and recommendations of the World Health Organization, and wear protective, full-body suits when treating Ebola patients with strict procedures on how to remove them. They trained for their mission for three weeks in Cuba and another 15 days upon arriving in West Africa.

The Cuban claim that unlike doctors from other countries, they would treat any infected doctors in the field under the same condition as their Ebola patients "until they recover or die" quickly fell by the wayside, as plans were made to move the doctor to Geneva for treatment. Even prior to flying to Geneva, Dr Baez has been placed in the care of British doctors.

Time and time again, Western nations are chastised for causing all of Africa's problems, even when Westerners weren't involved in any way.

If our involvement is so unwanted by these Africans, then I think we should respect their wishes. In this case, it means not providing support in this Ebola matter.

Now, we can't put our Western nations at risk, so we should shut down all travel to and from the affected nations, directly or indirectly, until this matter has been resolved.

I know it's in our Western nature to help those in need, but if these Africans don't want our help and blame us for stuff we are not responsible for, then I don't see why we should put our people and nations at risk to try to assist these Africans who don't want our help.

          Lybia? Egypt? Tunis? Somalia?

The western powers are full of shit. They get involved as long as they want if that suits their interests. As for the interests of african people, it's usually just 'Fuck them!'.

    Can I panic again now?

Or is Cuba far enough away / different enough that I can categorize it as "them" instead of "us" and go back to watching rich people engage in mock battles before cheering crowds?

You people pushing these ancient The Onion stories are nearly as bad as the fuckheads who post shitty xkcd comics all over the place.

Yeah, we all know about that shitty article. We saw it a long time ago.

Don't waste your time replying with a comment linking to a shitty xkcd comic, either. My filtering proxy is configured to remove those comments, so I won't even see it.

Nice sentiment to have doctors treated in the field.

But I thought you asshats were very critical of the US for "only" sending +4000 troops over there to build hospitals. "But look at the Cubans and all the doctors they're sending. SEE! They are going to treat them in the field, and that makes them awesome and the US are just a bunch of shits because they'll fly their infected people out for better treatment."

What are you asshats saying now? What's the new spin? Would you prefer that this doctor not be treated by the evil "five eyes" British doctors? Perhaps he should be treated in place and die to prove some kind of irrelevant point that apparently is important to you? It is easy to let other people die to prove your point while you do the all-important job of whining like an ass on the sidelines.

Apparently you think these evil five eyes countries should stop their Ebola research and treatments and just pull out of Africa. That will show them (again, I'm not sure what it will show them, but apparently you're much smarter than the rest of us).
