Engadget: http://www.engadget.com/2014/12/23/rockstar-sells-patents-ends-lawsuits/

The patent holding group Rockstar was formed in 2011 by Apple, BlackBerry, Ericsson, Microsoft and Sony to keep crucial intellectual property out of Google's hands, and eventually sue Android's partners in order to restrict competition.

Rockstar has sold all of its commonly held patents, and will drop the lawsuits that it still had left, including those leveled against HTC, LG and Samsung. The patents, which cost $4.5 billion, were sold to clearinghouse RPX for $900 million.

Is this RPX behaving like a patent troll or sell to such entities?

This "Rockstar consortium" sounds more like the "Axis of evil bastards collusion to plot evil deeds" ..

That Other Slash is running a story linking to articles on Techdirt [techdirt.com] and CNBC [cnbc.com] that clarify things. So if anything, RPX is behaving more like the GSM Association or MPEG LA, setting forth a uniform-royalty licensing arrangement for a particular set of patents.

It was. I'm proud to say I actually protested outside their offices. It was sad to see Nortel patents get purchased purely for the purpose of trolling. The really nasty part is that they 'promised' not to use them this way, and then immediately did. I'm gld the consortium lost billions on the deal.

but did the supporters really lose any money?

Considering that all the FUD that the law suits stired up a lot of other companies that use Android in their devices agreed to pay MS $X per Android device to keep MS from suing them.

To companies the size of MS and Apple 3.6 Billion is pocket change. MS at least is getting a continued income for what amounts to extortion and Apple was able to undermine the biggest threat to their mobile phone market.

Sounds more like they won. Anybody else remember SCO? all bark and snarl, and so many companies paid them rather than get dragged to court. Same tactics, different dog.

as long as we maintain legally fertile soil to nourish this kind of stuff.

Change the law, it goes away.

In order to change the law, we will probably have to change out a few congressmen.

Both babies and congressmen need to be changed frequently, and for the exact same reason.

When lawmakers sell out to people making a fortune by cronyism, its time to toss out both the lawmaker and the law he made.

Oh, well, it was worth a try.

I liked it so much I figured I would run it up the flagpole again. It's so true.

It seems very few can take the prestige of power without abusing it with crony capitalism.

Well, sometimes the baby isn't a baby at all, but a rotten piece of garbage.

It was a joke son. A knee slapper! (With apologies to Foghorn Leghorn).

And the joke was based upon the GP's misquote. He said: "Both babies and congressmen need to be changed frequently, and for the exact same reason."

Which normally reads "Both diapers and congressmen need to be changed frequently, and for the exact same reason."
