Sarah Meiklejohn, a lecturer at UCL, and an expert on computer security and crypto-currencies was recently part of an academic research team that studied pseudo-anonymity in bitcoin. In particular, they used transaction data to compare “potential” anonymity to the “actual” anonymity achieved by users. A bitcoin user can use many different public keys, but careful research led to a few heuristics that allowed them to cluster addresses belonging to the same user.

Big brother is trying hard to find out where you live.

There is no way on the planet that any government will allow its subjects to have anonymity, security. In their eyes, they own the place, and we all are just visiting, and can be put away when the government deems necessary. You know... just to keep us in check.

This means the government (any govt) might already have the means to track Bitcoin users and they are just letting us play for a while.

I have no idea what to make of it.

Everybody interested in cryptos has been long aware that bitcoin in *not anonymous*, having startups that, as they core business, sepcialize in de-anonymizing addresses since; having alternative currencies that make their *only* explanation of exeistence is that they *try* to make some anonymization.

I actually didn't bother to RTFA, since I can't find the news in this.
