The Russian government declassified the Earth-sensing data received from civilian domestic and foreign satellites according to the Russian legislation. The Russian government said Friday it will provide public access to previously classified Earth-sensing data received from domestic and foreign satellites.

"The Earth-sensing data received from civilian domestic and foreign satellites are no longer considered state secrets and it will be open to public access in line with the Russian legislation," the government said in a statement posted on its legal database portal.

They realized Google Maps was already better than what they had, so they "released" their classified material.

More to the point they released Google's material.

What's not clear is if the highest resolutions possible with some of the Digital Globe sats are now available via Russian sources, when these same products are still secret from the US sources. Last I heard, the US signed a contract for sole possession of the very clearest high-resolution photos from many if not all the US/EU based satellite photo companies.

Maybe this doesn't even cover photos. Perhaps only weather and such.

Extremely serious warning from Russia. Forget red phones. Everything goes with them if the USA does not stop. If they let the trigger go the deception stops. Many are looking at the same Russian area to discover what could be so important forcing everyone to secrecy. Shocking action. Russia trying to avoid global nuclear war but I do not know if it is good.

Everything goes with them if the USA does not stop

I am thinking most of what you need is already found on 'maps.google.com'.

Declassifying is just one less headache for them. Maintaining secrecy is exppeeeensive and in this case gained them very little.

Once the CIA/FBI/NSA get their heads out of their ass and stop looking for a boogymen around every corner I expect the same from them. They were well on their way before 9/11. Things are just reverting back to norms. People seem to think everything radically changes. It doesnt, its not like the movies. It takes years and slowly changes. Take for example the american revolution. That was not a radical change. It was basically the americans writing down what they were doing already in practice. They kicked out the ceremony of bowing to the crown. Even if england had won not much would have changed (look at canada).

          Shocking action
The only thing that is shocking is considering how secretive they are and they decided 'fuck it, lets stop farting around with this'. That is the only thing shocking. All of their 'enemies' already have this info (either by theft of sensing it themselves). They are basically propping the barn door open. They are probably hoping someone like google will put it up for free and organize it for them.
