The latest video of Apple's Campus 2 mega-project shows major progress on both the "spaceship" ring and parking garage, with over a dozen massive cranes now at work on the site. A previous prototype segment has also been removed.

Other than having more money that God, you have to wonder why they think building such a big place is wise or warranted? It seems like it is the whole control freak mentality requiring them to have as much as possible in one place behind their garden wall. That has certainly worked for them in the past, but you have to wonder if that really works any more.

In layman's terms, they have lots and lots and lots of money. Times a lot. Plus a billion.

(100b in retained earnings last quarter, $87b now, mostly due to a dividend I believe (which, comically enough, they paid for with borrowed money because the cost of 'repatriating' (eg paying taxes on) their offshored cash piles was higher than the interest they were paying on the bonds)).

Yeah, sort of, I guess.
Their products are over priced by at least half, (the fanboys line up anyway), their market share is shrinking [idc.com], they are selling at replacement level (new customer percentage is very low). Most analysts think this slide is due mostly to excessive price [theinquirer.net].
So their slice of the pie is shrinking at the same time as smartphone growth rate is slowing [idc.com] and more than one Chinese manufacturer is jumping into the market hard.
So they are spending a boatload of money that they might need to survive until the next wave (what ever that might be) arrives.
True they are sitting on a mountain of cash (159 Billion with a B) according to their last 10K, and can afford to buy this building out of pocket. And spending it is actually good for the economy. I just wonder if its good for Apple.

I worked for Apple on two different occasions. The reason I resigned from my first job there was that I grew weary of the commute.
How about riding the bus or light rail?
I was unable to when I worked there, there was no bus service from where I lived.

Out of curiosity, if anyone is up to date on drone regulation and privacy, is this drone flight over the construction site legal or is it in more of a gray area currently?
(Score: 2) by iwoloschin on Sunday January 04 2015, @03:09PM
Drone use is typically legal under 500' and for "Non Commercial" use. Some cities are trying to enact stricter rules, but it's really something the FAA needs to be regulating.
Of note, if there are any ads on that site one might be able to make the argument that the drone use was Commercial use, since the footage is producing income.
