To say that today (or yesterday, depending on your perspective) has been an interesting day for our community would be something of an understatement. While we understand that some people do dislike that 4/1 does not mean business as usual on the site, I think it provides us an important opportunity to remind everyone we are a single community, and just once in awhile, it's all right for us to have a bit of fun together and perhaps enjoy being a little bit silly.

For what it's worth, we understood that you didn't want a bunch of fake stories, so we tried to do something a little different, and hopefully catch you off guard at the same time.

I'd love to hear your feedback on what you liked and didn't like this year, and for those who wish to continue using it, the VT100 theme shall remain available as it was before. And with that note, so long, and thanks for all the fish :)

- NCommander

I haven't used that option for years, ever since flat screens started replacing CRTs.

Used to force web pages to have black backgrounds, to save energy. CRTs use a lot more power to show white backgrounds. Now with flat screens, that doesn't matter.

My school had green screens. They added amber screens while I was there. I found amber marginally easier on the eyes. Thankfully, one thing the green theme didn't do was simulate the low resolution of those monitors.

making the fun subjects a waste of elections

Fearless leader also think elections a waste because all subjects have fun!

On a more serious note, I use a Stylish script to fine-tune the colors of the red-and-gray SN theme. On default, I find that the red is too strong, the titles have too much contrast and the sidebars... oh my god the sidebars...

Anyway, since I rewrite only some of the CSS elements, this resulted in an interesting combination where most of the page was in usual colors, with some elements getting a makeover (e.g. bright green borders). Took me a few seconds to figure out what the deal was :)

Where I'm going with this is: if you use Firefox et.al., I'd recommend to get Stylish [mozilla.org] and tweak any sites you regularly visit to be easier on the eyes. It works great for those that don't change their CSS every week. I use scripts for e.g. Wikipedia, TVtropes, YouTube, Techdirt etc. Here's [pastebin.com] my script for SN, if anybody wants to try it (it's a modified version of a script I found on userstyles.org a while back).

So you're trying to tell me the Slenderman one was real?

Maybe it was an actual story, perhaps of the kind some tabloids might print any day of the year, but you can be sure no-one actually saw Slenderman, so it isn't worth reading. The NZ Weed one looks like an April Fools as well, as it reads like satire and was posted on April Fools, I'll just assume it is, and I won't waste my time trying to check.

I didn't mind the green screen, and if that was all you guys did I wouldn't really complain, but I do find all the fake stories on April Fools to be really lame, they are hard to do well and few succeed in doing good ones, so in general they are best avoided altogether. The thinking behind the seemingly-fake story was this: I remember distinctly that people complained about the fake stories being lame and overdone. So I thought coming up with stories that were actually real (but seemed fake) would be the ultimate troll, and *that* made me laugh anyway.

Please don't ever do that again. I found the screen totally illegible, and basically had to wait an entire day before it was possible to read anything on the site again.

Agreed; it was godawful; utterly illegible. The monospace characters had stems about a millionth of an inch thick and there was extremely low contrast.

Worse; it stayed stuck for me today. It finally cleared up, messing with F5 reload, but I don't trust it to STAY fixed.

      Massive FAIL.

For those who missed it, the featured article on Wikipedia was the Invisible Rail [wikipedia.org]. Seems to have been a random choice. I hope this starts a new trend, posting stuff on April 1 that is true but many will think is fake.

I don't get much time these days to read and write so I was checking every few hours on my Android phone and I really liked the green-on-black theme, The text was nice and clear and easy on the eyes :-)

...have always enjoyed the A1 stuff, even on the other site. The new theme was fine, cool even, I had no problem reading it. Heck, I'd be using it now but I found the Ponies theme instead. :P So I say keep it up, I appreciate the effort. If some don't like it they can miss one day a year. Big loss.

From these comments I think I might regret not tapping into the stream though. If we do it again I'll probably give that a go.

I didn't know about themes. Pretty neat. Thanks!
