The Tesla-Panasonic Gigafactory east of Sparks will make more than batteries.
In his State of the State address Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval said the factory will produce electric motors and gear boxes for Tesla's Model 3 vehicles.
Sandoval said the addition will mean another $350 million investment by Tesla and 550 new skilled jobs, in addition to the approximately 1,000 full-time workers already at the factory.
"Tonight I am pleased to announce that Tesla will expand its investment in Nevada by producing the electric motors and gearboxes for the Model 3 at the Gigafactory," Sandoval said.

Seems like a strange mix, motors and gearboxes have little to do with batteries.
In fact with all the CNC milling that goes into gears metal dust might be just another source
of battery contamination.
Sounds like the building was too big for current needs and its the cheapest space available.
Where were these things manufactured previously?
No, you are mistaken. I've always had this sig.

Manufacturing other components have always been apart of the Gigafactory plan. Gigafactory 2 is slated for somewhere in Europe, with the vision that complete vehicles come out of the doors. Panasonic actually rents space from Tesla in the current Gigafactory for manufacturing cells, while Tesla does Powerwall and Powerpack production currently on-site.
Freemont is expensive, so I would expect that Tesla will move as much manufacturing over to the Gigafactory as feasible in the future.

Yes, jobs for "drivetrain engineers" at the gigafactory were posted back in October. Some good info in this article: https://electrek.co/2016/10/15/tesla-drive-unit-production-lines-gigafactory-model-3/ [electrek.co]
No idea why the governor is shouting about it now. But of course, he is a politician.

Novice way to make gears... In high volume gears are forged into nearly net shape. Very little or NO machining is done. Brief overview here, one of many hits, http://www.gearsolutions.com/article/detail/5550/forging-ahead-for-gear-applications [gearsolutions.com]
