Taiwan's Council of Grand Justices (大法官) ruled that the current civil law banning same sex marriage is unconstitutional and that the legislature has two years to either amend the law or create a new law.

Taiwan News

Legislation enforcing the court's ruling is already working its way through the legislature, where both the ruling and major opposition parties support legalisation as do a majority of Taiwanese people and President Tsai Ing-wen.

news.com.au (News Corp)

A large percentage of the public in Taiwan has accepted the idea of same-sex marriage because leaders have elevated liberal social causes to show the island's democratic credentials in the face of China, a political rival that restricts free speech and association.

But the debate has prompted a backlash, with mass protests by conservatives in recent months.

Politics: Australians Approve of Same-Sex Marriage in Non-Binding Vote 88 comments

Australians have voted 61.6% to approve of same-sex marriage, and the Turnbull-led government has said it would aim to pass legislation by Christmas:

Australians decisively support same-sex marriage

Australians have overwhelmingly voted in favour of legalising same-sex marriage in a historic poll. The non-binding postal vote showed 61.6% of people favour allowing same-sex couples to wed, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said. Jubilant supporters have been celebrating in public spaces, waving rainbow flags and singing and dancing.

A bill to change the law was introduced into the Senate late on Wednesday. It will now be debated for amendments. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his government would aim to pass legislation in parliament by Christmas. "[Australians] have spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality," Mr Turnbull said after the result was announced. "They voted yes for fairness, yes for commitment, yes for love."

The issue only went to a voluntary postal vote after a long and bitter debate about amending Australia's Marriage Act. The result on Wednesday brings an end to what was at times a heated campaign. The vote itself had been criticised by same-sex marriage supporters, many of whom said it was unnecessary when parliament could debate the issue directly.

Same-sex marriage officially signed into law in Australia

Same-sex marriage has been officially signed into law in Australia, a day after MPs overwhelmingly approved a historic bill. Australia's Governor-General Peter Cosgrove signed off on the law on Friday - a formality required to enact the legislation. The vote on Thursday set off rarely matched celebrations in parliament, including cheers, hugs and a song. Supporters celebrated across Australia, many donning rainbow colours.

"So it is all done. It is part of the law of the land," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said after a brief ceremony on Friday.
He said the law would take effect immediately after midnight.

The first marriage ceremonies will happen from 9 January, given couples must give a month's notice of their intention to wed.

MP Tim Wilson proposed to his gay partner from the floor of Parliament during the debate.

Meanwhile: Austria to allow same-sex marriage with couples able to legally marry from 2019 at latest

Austria's top court has ruled that same-sex couples can marry from 2019 at the latest, bringing the often conservative Alpine country into line with more than a dozen other European nations. Gay marriage is now recognised in more than 20 countries, of which 16 are in Europe. "The Constitutional Court nullified with a decision on December 4, 2017 the legal regulation that until now prevented such couples from marrying," a statement released on Tuesday said. It said however that the current rules would remain in place until December 31, 2018 unless Austria's parliament changes the law before then.

Marriage is a legal concept, it has little to do with love. Historical examples abound when marriage occurred with no love whatsoever (the parents used to make the decision.) The society created this legal status for a reason - because it is interested in creating and protecting families that, eventually, bear children. As children are wanted by the society, the tax load on the family is reduced as a reward and partial compensation for their hard work, and as some sort of protection of the child (so that one of the parents is not incentivized to take off.) Single-gender pairs do not produce children, and the society owes them nothing, as there is nothing to reward or compensate. Those couples (and other configurations) are still free to do whatever they want, but they should not be receiving the benefits that are reserved for those who produce children. There is also nobody to protect, and such pairs should be free to separate whenever they want. I never understood what exactly, aside from tax benefits, drives them into the shackles of marriage.

          That's religious conservative bullshit.

Barren heterosexual couples receive all the legal and financial benefits as fertile heterosexual couples. Homosexual couples can raise children from other people, or orphans, or unwanted children. Also, there are so few homosexual couples wanting to raise children that it's barely an issue. It's a rounding error that we don't need to attend to, other than recognize our commitment to equal treatment under the law means they get to raise kids too if they want.

Away, away with your naturalistic fallacy!

Homosexual couples can raise children from other people, or orphans, or unwanted children.

The society is not interested in same-sex parents raising children. A kid needs parents of both genders. We know that because too many children are raised by single moms, and that ain't perfect.

Also, there are so few homosexual couples wanting to raise children that it's barely an issue.

Thanks for the confirmation of my original assertion that single-gender couples are not contributing to the growth of the society.

Marriage is an ancient institution that predates heterosexual intolerance. Straight people are also "twisted" and have a sense of "entitlement". And, as a part of the 'vast majority' represent a much larger problem. When are we going to do something about the vast majority and their twistedness and sense of entitlement because of, and over, sexual issues?

Humanity might very well become extinct due to many issues - such as overpopulation (the homosexuals don't seem to be contributing to that as much these days), and humanity has not become extinct despite producing homosexuals (and 'bi-sexuals') for, well, as long as it has existed.

In other words - heterosexual reproduction may be key in human survival (at this stage) - but that doesn't mean that only heterosexuals reproduce. Gay and bisexual men and women have, through social pressure or desire for children or rape or who knows - produced many children through heterosexual reproduction.

And as for "hearing" about problems - you can blame your heterosexual infested media outlets for that. Me, I don't think anyone should get married. Marriage is for shills.

In the US at least that's true. They have no ideas, no principles, no ideology, other than making "liberals" unhappy. Unfortunately liberals want a lot of good things, so to frustrate us means moving all of society backwards. They're totally willing to do that, because conservatism is simply nihilism and a longing for a return to feudalism. They pine to be slavers, and lords of serfs.
