Nintendo only lets users choose from a limited number of preset profile pictures (or custom-made Miis) for their online avatar on the Switch network. So at least one Reddit user was quite surprised to see pornographic profile pictures showing up on the user-placed balloons in Super Mario Odyssey's online "Balloon World" mode.

"The picture was changed several times over the course of my time patrolling, each picture being pornographic content," Redditor ewaison writes, including links to (censored) screenshots of the offending profile pictures in their post. "There are multiple [sic] of these balloons all being made by the same user. This is obviously intentional, and made to upset children."

With the menu installed, users can load an arbitrary 256 x 256 resolution JPG onto their SD card and use a "Change Avatar" menu option to upload that file as their profile picture. Nintendo apparently stores (and then distributes) whatever gets uploaded directly on its servers rather than using some sort of internal ID tag to denote which preset profile picture should be used.

Yes yes, we all think that everyone should be able to post goatse wherever they like.

However, I do think that bypassing Nintendo's (poor) internal controls to post a pornographic image onto a service that, while used by many adults, has been explicitly marketed as (and generally _is_) a kid-friendly place, is a really dick move.

One could even say that this individual _intended_ for this image to be seen by minors, in which case you're talking sex crime territory.

One could say that in this case the think-of-the-children line might be a pretty good way of propagating more of a "don't be a dick" compliant attitude amongst internet users. Don't give me the "just trollin'" defence - a true shitlord would have made the avatars adverts for competitors' games.

Oh, it's weirder than that. Mario, Bowser, and Peach are involved in some kind of weird BDSM threeway and all the adventures are staged setups for Peach to work out her kidnapping fantasies. SMB3 was outright stated to be a play, if I remember right. And they all play golf, tennis, cart racing etc. on their off days. This is seriously just a bunch of idle wealthy perverts playing sex games with one another.

Disagree. As a parent I find there is vanishingly little interesting content I can play/watch around my kids anymore.

When things didn't have to be M/R-rated to be taken seriously, we had lots of great movies and games that were safe for kids to experience. They don't have to like Street Fighter as much as the grown ups did, but at least it wouldn't lead to difficult questions like Mortal Kombat or DOA Beach Volleyball.

And no, I don't have a problem answering difficult questions. But when I sit down to play a game, I'd rather not have to stop playing for a half an hour while I answer them.

Unlike the plumber or electrician, people who don't have children actually have one important experience:

          They have been children.

You could argue that so have parents, but in my experience, most people, when they become parents, completely forget what it was like to be a child. They then go on to repeat the exact same mistakes that their parents made.

You were a child, but you were never a parent.
You had your childish concerns, but never those of the adult who had to manage the family and household.
Are you seriously putting your recollections (however fuzzy they are, esp. since very small children remember little; this amnesia is a well known developmental phenomenon) on an equivalent plane as that of the parent? As a kid you had no clue most of the time as to the dangers and consequences of the world around you. This is normal because you have to learn these things as you grow older and you are protected from the worst of it in that period by your adult family members and other authority figures. You're absolutely clueless to think of children as little adults--but then, perhaps you didn't grow up that much either so to you adults really are closer to children.

I really wish the hackers would stop giving Nintendo good PR and business reasons to keep their platform locked down. Maybe if people weren't this shitty, we could have nice things in Nintendo games like universal voice chat and custom profile pictures.
