Shark DNA could help cure cancer and age-related illnesses in humans

The first map of great whites sharks' DNA has revealed "mutations" that protect the animals against cancer and other illnesses.

Scientists hope more research could help apply the findings to treating age-related illnesses in humans.

Great whites also have the ability to repair their own DNA - something we can't do.

The research was carried out by a team of scientists at the Save Our Seas Foundation Shark Research Centre at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

Half man, half shark.

Also at Nova Southeastern University.

Interesting, did not know that humans had no way of repairing their DNA.

The joke was that is just a hilariously false claim.

Human DNA is repaired like 1 million times per day per cell.[1] Which (for ~30 trillion cells per human) amounts to about 30 quintillion times per day per person. For the entire human population (~7 billion), that means it is happening ~ 200 Octillion times per day (~2e29 times per day). Yet the BBC says it doesn't happen. Fake news.

Sometime in the not-too distant future we will finish the job of killing every shark in the ocean to make soup.

This will be the first time sharks were not on our planet in something like 420 million years, before our ancestors even stood on land.

Once we've finished eating all the tuna and whatever else we can, the dominant predator will be the jellyfish again, just like the Cambrian Period.

    Great. Now I'm sad.

If we have the DNA, there's a chance that we can de-extinctify the species in the future. Samples from multiple specimens preferred for genetic diversity.

We already serve jellyfish on sushi trains today, they taste quite good.. of course it is probably only a specific type of jellyfish but I'm sure we can expand our culinary expertise when we need it for other forms of boneless organisms.

To be fair the fishermen where I live have been denuding the coastal waters of fish as quickly as they can, and they're not Chinese.

They also spend a lot of money on creepy TV spots telling us how environmentally considerate they are, which I find a bit hypocritical.
