Unlike phantom limb syndrome, this is something that can be "unlearned". Like going from Windows XP UI, to Windows 7 UI (You thought I actually used Vista?!), and then Windows 10 UI (Again, did not go down the Windows 8 pipe dream). Yes, they're all very similar, in that there is a menu button in the bottom left hand of the screen. Now, imagine, Windows 12, with no Menu button at the bottom left hand of your screen. Sure, you may be able to shim one in there, but the vast majority of users, wouldn't. Better to just switch to Linux at that point? How much grievance must one put up with, before minor inconveniences in Linux become major advantages?

user should not suffer from phantom limb.
phantom limb (probably) happens because bits of the brain hardwired to process information from missing limb are no longer connected to the relevant input neurons --- since neurons abhor silence, they start interpreting other signals as coming from the missing limb (citation: "Brain Bugs" by Dean Buonomano).
in the case of learning to feel various tools as part of the body, no neural connections are broken when the object is removed, hence there's no reason for incoherent signals to take over the relevant bits of brain.
anyway, I'm fairly certain that people who work with delicate instruments also develop some version of more serious embodiment.
a lighter version is certainly present for rough instruments.
for me, when I ride the bike I don't consciously think about using my hands to turn the front wheel, I just think about the wheel turning a certain amount --- I only become conscious of the hands when there's a problem (such as the wind the other day forcing me off the road).

Now, just one step more to bring those into physical reality and I'll sign right up. Having such a rig that I could strap on and do work with would greatly expand my productivity. So often when I'm building something or fixing something I wish I had another set of hands to hold what I'm working on, or turn it upside down, or some such. Yes, I have vices and clamps but using those breaks your work flow.
