It's been 50 years since Nolan Bushnell co-founded Atari, which brought video games to the mainstream. To celebrate, we asked Bushnell what he learned during the early years—and what we've lost sight of since then.
When you hear the name "Atari," if you're of a certain generation, you might think back to a period in the very late 1970s and early 1980s when the Atari 2600 home video game console seemed unstoppable. But prior to Warner Communications purchasing Atari in 1976, the young company experienced four wild years of uncertainty and success while its employees relentlessly innovated a brand new class of electronic entertainment.
The guiding creative force at Atari during that time was Nolan Bushnell, who co-founded the company with Ted Dabney on June 27, 1972 in Sunnyvale, CA. Bushnell and Dabney had already worked together on the world's first arcade video game, Computer Space, at Nutting Associates, and they were ready to take the business more fully into their own hands. They soon had a monster hit with the arcade game Pong in late 1972, which spawned copycats that spread video games all over the world. But Atari still faced an uphill fight as big names jumped into the market.
With that in mind—and the 50th anniversary of Atari at hand—we thought it would be fun to talk about lessons from Bushnell's early years at the pioneering company. Bushnell spoke over the telephone, and his answers have been edited for formatting.

While I never got to meet Nolan Bushnell, I did contract work for Atari in a couple of different locations. One thing that doesn't seem to be well known is that the Coin-Op division survived the big crash of the home console business and kept on going. The home game crash was around 1982 and resulted in about 10,000 people being laid off at Atari (from memory). But the much smaller Coin-Op group kept right on going, at least into the 1990s, with different owners.
Coin-Op was "interesting", aside from the company game room (arcade games, off the front lobby), most of the building was separated into secure areas with access control by electronic card. I had a card that would get me into my group's offices & development lab but very little else. Walking around the hallways in Milpitas was mostly closed doors with cryptic names of different dev groups on them. So there wasn't all that much cross pollination around the company.
One exception was shared services, for example the mechanical engineering group that designed the cabinets and game play hardware. They perfected big track balls (billiard balls were not spherical enough) and a variety of other fun input devices. That's where people from the different game groups might get to meet by chance. One of the fun things to see was a VP (a very big and strong guy) who was also the final test for mechanical devices. He would beat the crap out of everything to see if it could stand up to the abuse that the games would get in an arcade or bar.

He was a nice enough VP for normal purposes. But I think he did enjoy banging on game mechanical hardware as a sideline to his normal work, probably gave him some job stress reduction...
It was a standing joke that games had to be a lot tougher than "military spec"--in the early days Coin-Op used some Mil.Spec. things and they failed quickly in the field.

If you ever witnessed what some players would do to the controls in an arcade, esp. if they lost and felt the loss was "unjustified" somehow, you'd understand why they had a VP of abuse.
The amount of literal, outright, abuse the arcade machines stood up to was unbelievable. Folks in the arcades back in their 80's heydays were not gentle to the machines in any way.

My 11 year old son has recently been obsessed with Undertale [play-undertale.com], a game that hearkens back to the old Atari consoles with their 8-bit graphics. He loves it despite the retro-graphics because the story is great and the gameplay is fun.
It makes me think that was a big part of Atari's popularity--the gameplay was fun, because they had to be. Sometimes it feels like modern titles have lost sight of that a bit, being so focused on graphics as they are (and can be).

Does it use a wimpy little home game controller? Or, even worse, keyboard input?
Imagine how much more fun it would be in an arcade cabinet, with a pool-ball sized track ball to move around, and big bright-colored buttons to fire weapons or fight. Or a big joystick that you could really slam back and forth on the solid base of an arcade piece.

Back in the day there was a jet fighter arcade name (whose name escapes me now) that had the player sit inside a cockpit to play. I thought that would be the wave of the future, with total immersion being the order of the day. Later visits to Disneyland with its Star Tours (a Star Wars-themed ride where you sat in a room on pistons that would move around according to cues on the screens inside to simulate the sensation of flight) supported my hope.
Alas, here we are 30 years later and the closest thing we get is VR, whose lag still gives me a headache. I want to strap into an exoskeleton or 3-axis rig that spins me around as I maneuver in a game. I want a scent device that emits the odors of the game environment. The Bronx Zoo has had for years what they call a 4D theater, which does something like that. At certain points of the movie there are rumblers under the seat or the scent of bananas that are blown into the room when you enter a jungle grove.

The graphical choice-style games in the 1980s were things like what Sierra Online did, and probably peaked with Tass Times In Tone Town, and Spy Vs Spy.
The likes of Undertale are only "retro" using the overly-marketed retrocon defintion made up by post-2000 clueless Millennial games reporters for dodgy gamer websights who had investments in the games they were promoting.

If you're wondering, it was "hard" in the business sense. He sold out so he could have a life. I also like the bit about Tempest. It was a hard game for me that I could never play for very long, but I think I enjoyed it for the same reason HTG interviewer did--trippy, entrancing, not really playing music and yet musical somehow.
