Open source projects are by their nature intended to be welcoming, pulling in contributions from many different volunteers. But in reality, open source and the tech industry in general often lack diversity. Speaking at the Open Source Leadership Summit in February, Mozilla's Chief Innovation Officer Katharina Borchert told the crowd that working to bring ethnic, gender, and skill diversity to open source projects isn't just the right thing to do because of moral grounds, it's the right thing to do to make projects more successful.

Me, I beg to differ. Pretty sure success has to do with the diversity of thought/ideas rather than genetic diversity.

          > ... reason, logic and the scientific method are white ...

Or, to narrow it down a little more, French. See: Rene Descartes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discourse_on_the_Method [wikipedia.org]

Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and of Seeking Truth in the Sciences (French title: Discours de la méthode pour bien conduire sa raison, et chercher la vérité dans les sciences). The Discourse on The Method is best known as the source of the famous quotation "Je pense, donc je suis" ("I think, therefore I am"), which occurs in Part IV of the work. (The similar statement in Latin, Cogito ergo sum, is found in Part I, §7 of Principles of Philosophy.)

The Discourse on the Method is one of the most influential works in the history of modern philosophy, and important to the development of natural sciences. In this work, Descartes tackles the problem of skepticism, which had previously been studied by Sextus Empiricus, Al-Ghazali[1] and Michel de Montaigne. Descartes modified it to account for a truth he found to be incontrovertible. Descartes started his line of reasoning by doubting everything, so as to assess the world from a fresh perspective, clear of any preconceived notions.

Kinda ditto here. If one searches, one can find an all-Caucasion team to to the job, or an all-Negro team, or an all-Asian team. And, if you search, you can find a diverse team. If a person is being an ass about it, he can specify one female Asian, one male black, one transgendered Caucasian, and so on. An extreme ass might even specify hair and eye colors of the team.

Diversity, in and of itself means diddly squat. You want qualified people for the job, and you don't bend the qualifications to meet stupid-assed quotas. Diversity of the mind is a really great thing to look for when recruiting for some specific project. Find an expert who was schooled in China, another who went to college in England, another from Russia, and one or more colleges in the US. THAT is intellectual diversity. And, THAT is valuable in research, engineering, or whatever.

The color of the employee's skin, or his gender, has nothing to do with a successful project. Absolutely nothing. Incompetent idiots come in all sizes, colors, genders, religions, and political persuasions. Assembling a "diverse" team of incompetent idiots isn't going to make any project successful.

Well even with regard to genetic diversity, those who preach it don't practice it.

Google, for example, is pretty much all White and Oriental males with a few token high-visibility spatterings here and there. And they compensate in ridiculously historically-revisionist ways, this, for example, [amazonaws.com] kinda like when Israel chose their first Black Miss Israel after being caught [forbes.com] injecting African immigrants with birth-control against their will?

And for local people, Qualcomm is almost entirely Chinks and Pajeet males with a handful of White males and spotting any kind of woman around the campus is like reading a Where's Waldo book. Though, to Qualcomm's credit, it was never loud and obnoxious about the "diversity" bullshit, especially since its two dominating ethnicities skew towards mysogyny -- and was hit by a phat lawsuit [fortune.com] proving that point.

The problem is that the people abusing the word "diversity" count on the audience making the assumption that diverse means a diversity of all. Whenever we hear the word "diversity," we should now question every instance of it...diversity of what? Diversity of whom?

GP is probably referring to things like this:

        From the second link:

Point is, we need to stop trotting out MLK for the most part, my fellow whitefolk. Sure, there will be times it’s meaningful, particularly when we need to put someone in their place because they’re misusing MLK and need a quote more representative of MLK’s overall and long-term views. Because so many of us who are white don’t know crap about MLK. We see him as this peaceful, soft-spoken man who wanted peace above all else.

But in truth, while he preached non-violent protest, he didn’t preach peace. He preached fundamental change. Upsetting the apple cart. Rewriting society. He wanted not just an end to racism but to reshape capitalism itself because of the way it mistreats the average worker—among other radical social views he held that would uproot most of what we’ve grown accustomed to in this country.

Point is, we need to stop trotting out MLK for the most part, my fellow whitefolk.

That is a very racist position. I am not obliged to adopt and follow any ideas by the virtue of my skin color anymore than I am obliged to do so by the color of my irises or the shape of my asshole.

Because so many of us who are white don’t know crap about MLK.

Ladies and gentlemen, pointless statement of the year right there. Many black people don't know crap about MLK either. There are far too many historical figures for everyone to be intimately familiar with them. It is an unreasonable standard to demand such level of understanding before agreeing with someone else's ideas, and it is bigoted to decide who has to abide by this standard based on skin color.

But in truth, while he preached non-violent protest, he didn’t preach peace. He preached fundamental change.

Nonsense. Radical change and peace are not mutually exclusive. The writer is conflating two entirely different meanings of the word, she says peace (aversion of conflict) but is trying to refute peace (aversion of violence).

The law pronounces him equal — abstractly — but his conditions of life are still far from equal."

"Although the terms desegregation and integration are used interchangeably, there is a great deal of difference between the two...Desegregation simply removes legal and social prohibitions. Integration is creative...more profound and far reaching than desegregation...

"Integration...is the welcome participation of Negroes into the total range of human activities...Desegregation is not enough; integration alone is consonant with our national purpose."

Oh I know the "Dream" speech was carefully crafted rhetoric to serve a purpose. There is a lot of evidence he was a Communist, but I have seen writings where he seems to reject the Communists, demonstrating an understanding of the dead end it is and it's utter hostility to Christianity. So who really knows, lets judge what he did and said and not get into endless debates about beliefs and motives. There is also a good argument he was merely playing "Good negro" to the Panthers "Bad violent negros". But it isn't arguable that the "Dream" speech is considered problematic now, as ably demonstrated by Prog posters in the replies to my post; but progs in leadership positions find it difficult to memory hole it without eliminating King entirely from history and they have invested too much in his legend for that.

Hell, you're entirely correct. I will cop to white and cis privilege, but this is coming from someone who ticks half the boxes on this list.

This sort of cargo-cult mentality regarding diversity is a sign of a mentally bankrupt organization. Yes, you want to make sure you have a wide set of viewpoints and backgrounds on your team, but they also have to be competent to do the work. This is a band-aid, a lot like affirmative action; something people do to assuage their guilt over their complete lack of fucksgiving when it comes to actually solving the systemic issues at the root of all this.

When these organizations start fixing up inner city schools, rescuing human trafficking victims, opening food banks, THEN I'll be impressed. At this point it's attempting to signal virtues they don't have. Save the signalling for when you have something to back it up with.

If, say, gender diversity was the bee's knees we'd see a lot less male dominated silicon valley companies succeeding.

That doesn't really follow, unless your input set is a mixture of diverse and non-diverse companies. In reality, almost all funded startups in the valley are male dominated and have around a 90% failure rate. Perhaps they'd have an 85% failure rate if they were more diverse, perhaps they'd have a 95% failure rate, but we don't have the information to extrapolate.

Diversity in thought can be useful, yeah. But diversity in gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, whatever? IMHO, if you push your viewpoint based on these criteria then the organization is doomed to failure.

I see one as a route to the other. Society places a lot of pressures on people growing up that shape their adult worldview and these pressures are different depending on socioeconomic background, gender, and ethnicity. The goal is a diversity of ideas and viewpoints, but that's far easier to accomplish with people from different backgrounds. The companies that are annoying in this regard are the ones that add men and women of different ethnicities from wealthy backgrounds in the same few areas and say 'look, we're super diverse!' - it's only true if 'super' is short for 'superficially'.
