Gunmen have attacked a convoy of trucks carrying uranium fuel to a nuclear power plant near the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro, police say.

The convoy came under attack as it drove past a community controlled by drug traffickers in Angra dos Reis, a tourist city 145km (90 miles) from Rio.

Police escorting the convoy responded and a shootout followed. No-one was injured or detained.

The convoy reached the Angra 2 plant safely 20 minutes after the attack.

The attack in the Rio-Santos highway is the latest in a series of violent incidents in an area popular with visitors.

In Brazil, all firearms are required to be registered with the minimum age for gun ownership being 25.[1] It is generally illegal to carry a gun outside a residence, and a special permit granting the right to do so is granted to certain groups, such as law enforcement officers.[2] To legally own a gun, an owner must hold a gun license, which costs R$1000,[2] and pay a fee every three years to register the gun, currently at R$85.[3] Registration can be done online or in person with the Federal Police.[4]

Yes, of course. Broken fingernails must be treated immediately, or they may turn into broken fingers, or worse.

Sometimes, I believe that standard police practice requires that an officer be treated for imaginary injuries. If there is no injury, then there was no crime, or some such nonsense. Even if the individual cops all agree that there were no injuries, a sergeant can order a junior officer to "have that looked at".

I was watching Live PD and a cop got hit in the face by some guy. He said he was fine but every other officer who arrived on the scene came up to him one by one and asked if needed to get it looked at. It was kind of weird that they wouldn't let it alone.

That if you require gun registration (not background checks, actual gun registrations), people will start shooting at nuclear stuff.

    It happens every time.

When was the last time you heard about anyone shooting at nuclear material in the US? Never. Because we have the Second Amendment.

You know what else we have -- English. The have gun registration in Brazil, and look what it's gotten them? They all speak some incomprehensible shit that no one from a country with the Second Amendment would speak.

And it goes on and on. Caipirinhas, Feijoada, nude beaches, samba music. When does it end? I'll tell you when -- the twelfth of never, that's when -- unless they get a Second Amendment!

Except the only one who is talking about *banning* guns is you.

Which of these folks [wikipedia.org] are calling for an outright ban on firearms?

I'll make it easy for you -- none of them. This whole banning/confiscating guns bit is just conspiracy theory bullshit.

You may think that everyone should own at least six guns and be ready to open fire at anyone who belches too loudly. That's fine. Many people agree with you. Others do not.

By tarring those who don't believe exactly as you believe with the same broad brush, you're exhibiting the same behavior that your decry in others. English speakers call that 'hypocrisy', in case you were wondering.

Wouldn't it make more sense to ensure that *your* gun rights (assuming you're not diagnoseably nuts or a felon) are protected by cutting the legs out from under those who would restrict the rights of responsible gun owners by, at a minimum, making all *commercial* gun transactions (note the use of *commercial* here) subject to background checks, regardless of whether they occur in a gun shop, a gun show or a flea market?

Once that's in place, you can reasonably say that "reasonable regulation is in place, now get off my lawn before I shoot you dead with my legally owned firearm, you candy-ass, gun-hating, man-bun wearing, pansy piece of shit!"

But no. You need to take the position that psychotic mental institution escapees, drug-addled lady-boys (not that there's anything wrong with lady-boys, I'm just on a hyphenation kick at tha moment), domestic abusers hunting down their victims, and shit-canned postal workers should be able to access as many weapons and ammo as possible, immediately, with no regard to public safety. This happened at the nuke plant I used to work at on the Texas coast, STP. Truck carrying the new fuel showed up to the protected area gate and we noticed a shotgun blast near the right front wheel well. Drivers had no idea, remembered a loud sound but thought it was something on the road.

Probably turned into an incident you can look up on the NRC's site. I can't find it now, maybe they just chalked it up to being in Texas.

I'll tell you, I love this story, it shows how smart Jair really is. He knows that nuclear is one of the most important things to a country. Brazil, they have so much beautiful coal, it's great for Economy. But, nuclear is what brings true respect. MS-13 didn't show any respect. Or, any regard. But Jair protected his nuclear very strongly, very successfully -- Good Guys w/Guns. That's always the best way. As we've seen so many times. Very proud of Jair's Law Enforcement guys. And if they hadn't been around, I really believe I'd run in there even if I didn't have a weapon. Because I want Brazil to succeed. We need more countries like Brazil. The convoy was carrying uranium fuel fabricated in Resende

The uranium was being transported in armoured containers in a "natural state" and would not have offered any risk as it had the same level of radioactivity as when it is found in nature, Brazil's nuclear agency Eletronuclear said.

These two statements are in direct opposition. You don't put uranium found "in its natural state" into a reactor. Reactor fuel has been enriched and is in no way "natural" nor "without risk". It is in fact very unsafe which is why it was being transported in armored containers. You can't make a bomb with reactor fuel, but you can do a lot of other very bad things with it.

I'm going to take that to mean that the spokesperson was referring to the half-life of the fuel, which hadn't changed with processing. Of course, that's not a good measure of risk, but they have a disinformation campaign to run, so I'm willing to give them a little slack.

I'm only buying that if the guy was trying to say that the fuel was "natural" because it was headed into the plant as opposed to being spent fuel coming out of the plant which would have a wide variety of dangerous actinide decay products. It sounds more like a PR deflection than anything though because new fuel rods are highly enriched in U235 and are quite dangerous even in their "natural" unused state.
