The Feds are building an America-wide face surveillance system – and we're going to court to prove it, says ACLU

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is suing the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), and the Department of Justice (DoJ) in an effort to find out what the US federal government's systems and policies are around facial recognition.

Following a freedom-of-information request in January that Uncle Sam still has not responded to, the ACLU has demanded [PDF] the release of the TLA trio's guidelines and rules regarding what the union terms "face surveillance technology," as well as details of any contracts or pilot programs it has with private companies over the technology.

Specifically, the civil-rights warriors have filed suit in Massachusetts against the Feds, requesting the district court forces the agencies and department to cough up "public records pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act."

The ones that are subject the FOIA should amount to about a three fold pamphlet.

That's not what the ACLU thinks. Since their FOI request in Jan 2019 was unsuccessful, now they are suing. And requesting a variety of info, per the ACLUM link in tfs:

The ACLU’s lawsuit seeks the release of each agency’s guidelines and policies regarding the use of face surveillance technology, communications with private companies about the purchase, piloting, or testing of the technology, and records relating to the number of face recognition searches performed by the relevant agency, among other records.

That's not what the ACLU thinks.

It doesn't matter what they think. All they will get is fabrications and excuses, as per standard procedure.

As for the "policies", just assume the worst, you are being recorded. We just have to create a system [develop a society] that depreciates the information to render it harmless. At the very least, let's make sure nobody has the advantage, point the cameras back at the authorities.

Google, Tesla, Waymo, etc. need to step in to help with this because they basically just made a direct attack on all sorts of machine vision technology.

Who is "they" here? Because the federal government didn't start these policies just now. They've been directly attacking freedom for half a century and more.

The "they" is the set of gremlins who somehow put my post in the ACLU thread when I was actually replying to the Texas patent thread.

Was still appropriate to topic. Only big tech should be able to take facial pics.
