Bill Aimed at Ending 'Warrant-Proof' Encryption Introduced in House:
Referred to as the Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act, the bill aims to put a stop to criminals using “warrant-proof encryption and other technological advances” to hide their activity from authorities, Congresswoman Ann Wagner (R-MO), who introduced the bill, said.
“It is time tech companies stand with criminal investigators and the public to make clear they are committed to rooting out perpetrators who use their services to commit horrific crimes. As the digital world advances, so must our legislative solutions to investigate crimes that hit hardest the most vulnerable in our society,” Rep. Wagner commented.
Law enforcement agencies have long argued that strong encryption hinders their ability to conduct successful investigations in certain cases, often asking for backdoors that would provide them fast access to data of interest, but tech companies have opposed these requests, arguing that backdoors would introduce serious security and privacy risks.
The legislation would require tech companies to provide authorities with access to encrypted user data, while also stating that the Attorney General would report on which companies can comply. Furthermore, the government would offer compensation to companies that comply with the legislation.

I like the cut of your jib. Back in the late 90s, when the little form popped up that asked for your name and location I'd always put in "Hafez the Enforcer" from "Baghdad, AL" because Baghdad, Iraq wasn't available on the form. I always got my 128-bit encryption, no problem. It was my little protest against the insanity of trying to ban "export" of something that could be "shipped" overseas as soon as ONE GUY downloaded it off the Internet. While the FBI was doing this stupidity, the real terrorists were busy getting IDs from the Virginia DMV, and teaching themselves how to fly... but not how to land. :(.

You don't need mathematics (really - although it helps in cracking or proving difficulty of cracking).
A one time pad (x2, obviously) will do, or a book cipher.
Tricky bit is, as always, the secret key exchange. It's not warrant-proof in that they can come take all your books or search for the OTP, but they need to do a physical search, much more work than a data trawl.

Any backdoor has a key. And a key that is a master key to every secret in your country is a valuable commodity. Even if it doesn't unlock your government secrets, it does at the very least unlock the trade secrets of every corporation in your country. I think I'm not the only one who could see this being valuable to the likes of North Korea or Iran.
And do you think they are above writing a letter akin to "Dear (insert government agent name here). We happen to know that you have access to the government backdoor key. Here is a picture of your lovely wife and kids, currently residing in an undisclosed basement nearby..."
How long do you think your government-only backdoor is for YOUR government only? And how long do you think 'til every corporation that doesn't want to outsource their R&D to Iran, China or NKor flees your country?

We've seen how well "accessible encryption" has been done many times over the years by companies with billions of dollars to invest in it. Look at how many times Apple, Sony, Microsoft, and others have failed to keep stuff completely secured. Nothing they can come up with today will last the test of time.

Well, that's not guaranteed. Many encryptions have remained unbroken. But if large number of people have access to the keys, SOMEBODY will leak them for SOME reason. Stupidity is a big winner here, but bribery is a close second. Various threats are in a distant 3rd place.

Nonetheless any encryption can be bruteforced. A government competent in information issues would be expected to have access to enormous computing power, supercomputers and the like. So all this bullshit whining about warrant-proof encryption and government specific backdoors are based on pure ignorance. If access to a safe is blocked by lock with no key then government can use explosives/heavy machinery to eliminate it. So it's pointless for government to want global master key to all locks. Likewise any encryption can be bruteforced by government if they got access to supercomputers and skilled cryptography specialists.

Fair point regarding access without back doors. I think the FBI has complained at least three times now that they couldn't get into a phone. Of course, later they were able to get into it anyway and it was all a power play to push for something along the lines of what we're seeing here.

As far as I know, they got in because of exploits in iPhones/iOS and Android. It's also possible to get into an iCloud account even if the iPhone itself is locked. At some point, will Apple or some other company just start selling a phone that protects encrypted contents with 100% effectiveness? iPhone 5c is compromised, but maybe iPhone 12/13/14/15/16... won't be nearly as easy to access.
loonycyborg Encryption should still be very secure in many cases. Maybe NSA cryptographers manage to weaken an algorithm a bit, or use supercomputers to brute force weaker RSA, etc., but it could require quantum computers to completely break some forms of encryption.

When did you last time use actual one time pad? All hard to break encryption schemes are also pain in the ass to use. And people who really want to use them wouldn't care about what companies are mandated by law to offer. They will use own stuff. You cannot outlaw mathematical algorithms.

"Memorize long password" and "carry around a dongle" is something what most people won't actually do. Generic consumer solutions by definition would strive to make things convenient instead at expense of introducing enough weaknesses that it won't be a problem for government to penetrate systems. In case of tech-savvy criminals they will eventually acquire a solution without backdoors, doesn't matter what laws are in effect.

Oh, decrypting one-time pads is easy:
Step 1: Decide what cleartext you want it to decrypt to.
Step 2: Xor that cleartext with the encrypted message to get the corresponding key.
Step 3: Demonstrate that the key indeed decrypts to that cleartext.

You're assuming every government official and law enforcement officer that would have access to the key would understand information security well enough to practice it effectively and have an ironclad personal code of ethics.
I'd bet that the key would be stolen or leaked before even 30% of major tech companies finished implementing it. Phishing, a misplaced laptop, bribes, somebody taking it home so they can intercept the webcam of some attractive person that lives in their neighborhood...

Beyond that, simple leaks happen all the time. The NSA leaked it's hacking tools to the world a couple years ago. Predictable, those were quickly re-purposed into several crypto-extortion trojans that have so far done billions in economic damage all over the world.

The gods are not imaginary, but they don't have the kind of existence people think they have. They are inherited psychic structures, what Jung called archetypes, though he got a lot of the details wrong. They exist in a pre-verbal (or possibly sub-verbal) level of the mind and they are shared by people. Given mutation, different people have slightly different resident gods, but most of them are the same. They rarely intrude into consciousness, but if you understand them properly, you can benefit from addressing them...though the forms used by most prayers are not suited to good results. This is also true for most mantras, but some koans are valuable.

This is from R.A.Wilson. I've tried to rewrite it avoiding the Egyptian motif, but ran into trouble with scansion. The names of the gods are not significant, the best I could do was:

I bless the air, the Horus hawk, (This is the line I couldn't fix. Air is symbolically reasoning and spirit)

The crucial thing to notice is that the conscious self is addressing the unconscious in a friendly manner, not begging. If you befriend your gods, they will help you feel better about things, and possibly to be luckier. And just doing this a couple of times wouldn't be that helpful. I'd suggest doing it the first time you see the sun or the moon each day. This will help strengthen the connection.

Imagine an analogy:
Your house has another door, called government door. Only authorities have a key to that door, just for case a crime could happen in your house, or a fire, or whatever casual mishap for which they may need to legally enter your house.

As Opportunist said above, the core problem is even more fundamental. Even if you completely trust your government to only use that door under appropriate circumstances, it is guaranteed that the criminals and foreign governments get copies.
I am wondering whether this entire debate is a case of horrific stupidity or if it's just a distracting form of political theater - if we're screaming at the government over this, then we're not screaming because 29 million Americans didn't have enough to eat for some part of last month.

In the past, this has been judged to be pretty much impossible. (That is, no one has come up with a way to make data in the gadget both easily available to the manufacturer and not available to determined bad guys.)
Yet, the current proposed law requires that manufacturers do this.
Before mandating a seemingly impossible task, should Congress provide clues for at least one example method for implementing this with an examination of the resulting risks?
This is well known to be an area with tradeoffs. Without such an example, how can one discuss the tradeoffs to understand how the cure compares to the disease?

Encryption law gets passed. It doesn't affect services like Gmail because all of the communications can already be read by Google and law enforcement can get it with a warrant. Encryption will still be used, but not end-to-end encryption.
Peon gets caught with encrypted drive, suspected of CP, tax evasion, or whatever, and refuses to give up the password to law enforcement. Fine, hit them with a prison sentence for the encryption crime.
That's how it will go down if these laws get passed. For many people nothing will change.

Then, one fine day, someone attempts to comply and the password doesn't work. Maybe the data is corrupt, maybe their memory is corrupt, but either way, they're going to jail for an "encryption crime".
