History and science collided at the University of Virginia on Friday, when the school announced the discovery of a hidden chemistry lab amid ongoing renovations of its historic Rotunda building.

The room offers a glimpse into the way science was taught in the mid-19th century, as well as to the role of Thomas Jefferson – who founded the university in 1819 – in facilitating the shift from religion to science as a central principle of higher education in the United States.

"It really is the beginning of the teaching of science" as fundamental, said Jody Lahendro, a supervisory historic preservation architect for UVA. "The Enlightenment, changing the viewpoint of the world."

[...] "This may be the oldest intact example of early chemical education in this country," said Brian Hogg, senior historic preservation planner in the Office of the Architect for the University.

Sounds like you have never remodeled a part of your home. The conversations probably went:
Contractor: " Hey Jefferson to get the walls to meet up right we'll have to rip out these 2 and it will set you back 2 months which puts us into winter."
Jefferson: " Can we just put the wall here and cut this space out and be done this week?"
Contractor: " Sure but you will lose a little space."
Jefferson: " Its a big effing plantation house. A little space is the least of my worries. And besides I'll fix it next remodel."
    * forgets it is there / never remodels again
You have to remember it was just his house not a museum. And a lot of weird things can be done during a remodel. There are all kinds of odd thing going on in old homes. This home is pretty old and pretty big. So lots of time and space for odd things to happen. Just saying, at the time the decisions make sense and in retrospect they seem really out of place.

Had it been Ben Franklin, he would have been all, "nopers, those who would give up essential Space, to purchase a little temporary Time, deserve neither Space nor Time."
