The Federal Communications Commission announced today the Commission will release robocall and telemarketing consumer complaint data weekly to help developers build and improve "do-not-disturb" technologies that allow consumers to block or filter unwanted calls and texts. The data, including originating phone numbers of telemarketers and automated robocalls, will be released and available on the FCC's Consumer Help Center's website.

"Consumers want and deserve effective tools to empower them to choose the calls and texts they receive. This data will help improve do-not-disturb technologies so they can provide the best service for consumers," said Alison Kutler, chief of the FCC's Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau, which manages consumer complaints. "As we encourage providers to offer these services, and as the Commission recently made clear that there are no legal barriers to doing so, we continue to look for ways to help facilitate important consumer tools."

The default ringtone on my phone is set to silence. I have configured a few additional groups with different ringtones, for friends and other people that I want to receive calls from. Everyone else goes into the voicemail. If they have anything worthy to say, they are welcome. However usually they just hang up.

My cell phone is primarily a tool for me to make a call when I'm away from the desk. Say, if a car needs service on the road. If someone else wants to contact me at that time... I am not that important, and neither are the callers.

If AT&T offers a blacklist, I don't want it. There are just too many telemarketers out there, and they change numbers every week. I don't want to spend my life manually updating blacklists. If the cell phone company doesn't want to outlaw telemarketers, then I refuse to receive calls from strangers.

I hope they come out with instant messaging/SMS/MMS text white lists.

So many places want a mobile number and I am not going to pay 10 cents per message (or upgrade to unlimited messages) just so they can go green and avoid sending me a statement. If enough people filtered out unsolicited junk texts, maybe these wouldn't get forced upon us.

Heck even Steam is demanding it, in case I lose my desktop and need to get the password reset when I am not near the only computer I log into it with and I need to reset the password. Sure it may prevent hackers from resetting my account I guess, but I am more than willing to provide a custom security question and answer that I use no where else as an alternative.
