  I saw the subject line, and initially thought you'd meant to prevent long-range sailing in the age of wooden ships (hulls were sealed with tar/pitch). Which, thinking about it, would have drastically changed the history of the world. What if Europeans hadn't been able to "discover" the new world until after they'd developed steel ships?
