El Reg reports

Sennheiser has announced a new pair of headphones it says will cost "around €50,000" (£35,314 or US$54,279).

The forthcoming "Orpheus" model boasts silver-plated copper cable and "gold-vaporized ceramic electrodes and platinum-vaporized diaphragms ... exactly 2.4 µ thick, the result of extensive research that shows that any thinner or thicker would be sub-optimal." The accompanying amplifier boasts "comes from Carrara in Italy and is the same type of marble that Michelangelo used to create his sculptures.

The tubes "rise from the base and start to glow", and "the control elements, each of which are crafted from a single piece of brass and then plated with chrome ... slowly extend from the marble housing."

We could go on, but fear doing so may induce ire among some readers. Know, then, that there's a very gushy website here [ecmascript required] full of all the jargon a rich audiophile could want.

These headphones would go geat with my Demon AKDL1 audio cable! http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AKDL1-Dedicated-Discontinued-Manufacturer/dp/B000I1X6PM [amazon.com]

Here's a review of my $8,000 audio cable:

The minute I plugged this cable in, I knew something was amiss. The first evidence? The small wormhole that appeared in our living room, right next to our holstein cowhide recliner. Peering into it I could discern the snarling face of a Ferengi, likely somewhere out in the Gamma quadrant.

Then things got really hairy. Brad shouted from the kitchen that he was detecting elevated tachyon levels from our Vita-Mix, so we immediately diverted power to our forward Romco Rotisserie array. Set it and forget it, indeed.

Still no go. The wormhole continued to grow. So I did what anyone in this rather awkward situation would. I recalibrated our George Foreman Grill (about 10 picometers), ejected the warp core from our Dyson Ball Vac, and unplugged all the Magic Jacks in the house. Bingo. No more worm hole.

I guess what I'm saying is that you can use this cable, but only if you have substantial Star Fleet training.

Be sure to demagnetize your CDs first. You will overamplify the cable and it will distort the warm sounds of the highs and lows. https://www.gcaudio.com/cgi-bin/store/showProduct.cgi?id=190 [gcaudio.com]

My uncle forgot to do that and fried out 3 sets of cables before he realized what was wrong! He had to use the 'el cheapos' for several hours while waiting on the delivery from the custom chartered jet he rented just to replace them.

You don't need to demagnetize your CD or DVD as long as you rewind it first. You can buy CD/DVD rewinders so you don't wear down the bungspool threads in your player. Here's a video showing a mid-price rewinder... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcVs1KPwX3o [youtube.com]

I sell those. $500 each. I already sold like 50.

Oh my uncle the one who blew out three cables learned that the hard way. He had the re-winder too that you show. It only sorta worked. You must get both. Those waves induced in the length of the cable from a magnetized CD will harmonize on the particular music and cause distortions that any idiot can hear. Make sure you demagnetize too and the waves will not be created. The rewinding is just convenient for the next time you want to hear it in your perfectly sealed room.

$8000 cables are just the beginning.

Imagine what you could charge for copper that's isotopically pure.

Isotopically pure? That's far from the best! The best audio comes from cables with an isotopic superlattice! The different isotopes form a perfect phononic crystal which can transmit the sound with much less distortion than an isotopically pure cable. But make sure to only buy quality: Not only the crystal, but also the phononic crystal must be monocrystalline. Especially defects in the latter are clearly audible!

Of course such cables are expensive to produce, so don't expect a price below $500,000. Anything cheaper cannot be a true quality cable!
