Guess we came a bit late to this news, our subspace receiver must have failed..

After a promising 1st episode were produced of this Star Trek, the producers are looking towards crowdfunding again to expand the series with a further two episodes.
ST:Renegades follows the same universe set out in DS9/Voyager and pick up in year 2388 a decade after Voyagers return.
Many well loved trek actors return to reprise their roles in the ambitious fan production incl. Walter Koenig(Chekov), Terry Farell(Jadzia). Robert Beltran(Chakotay), Tim Russ(Tuvov). Just to name a few.
You can watch the first episode on Youtube here and judge for yourself is this is a worthy alternative or supplement to CBS new paywalled series.

The first episode is available on Youtube.

I enjoyed watching it, but it's got some issues. The special effects in space were fine, but during scenes with actors, the effects look painfully fake. The writing was ... , but it was just an introductory episode (ie: get to know the characters), and to be fair, it took TNG and DS9 some time to get into polished, poignant material.

For better acting, writing, and special effects in a crowdfunded Star Trek, watch Prelude to Axanar [youtube.com]. That being said, Prelude didn't attempt a story driven episode in the same vein as Renegades did. Hopefully Axanar's feature film (that they're currently making) will be a story driven film with the same level of quality.

For a great story & characters, try Star Trek: Aurora [youtube.com]. But be warned that Aurora is completely computer animated, and honestly... it's not even close to the quality of a professional animation studio. But Aurora has to be my favorite of the bunch. If you get past the production value, the story connects like the best Star Trek episodes do.

Minor gripes aside, I love that people are making these. We're finally seeing a renaissance where fan made content is competing very well with established studios. Keep it coming!

They completely ignored the 'bad aliens plight', which was supposed to have be caused by federation actions from I assume a movie or episode I hadn't watched.

Secondly, while I'm all for doing what is needed to save the Federation, it seemed like they were pretty remorseless about killing them. Rather not unlike Westerners and Muslims, despite how much of the current instability over there is their own doing.

    That said:
I did like it as a continued foray into the world of Star Trek, taken from a more indepdent and less federation focused bent. A couple of series, or miniseries segueing between 'character troops' representing different Star Trek cultures and events would be very cool to see, especially if they focused both on the values and ideals of those groups, as well as individuals and groups bucking the system, or working to change it for the better.

I don't feel that it is 'emulating Roddenberry's Trek' so much as building upon the established history to go in a new direction. There would need to be more introspection, conflict between morals, laws, and what needed to be done, and more of a focus on righting past wrongs. (For instance, using illegal time travel technology to avert the crises from Episode 1 by stopping the destruction of those alien's homeworld. Perhaps leading to the unintended side effect of them joining the Klingon Empire as a Vassal race, or instead choosing to fight with them, depending on where they were spatially located.)

I've watched a bunch of these fan-made productions and am glad to have them. Yeah, a lot of 'em are rough, but I've decided to ignore that and enjoy them for what they are. I will say that on average the storylines are bolder than we've seen on commercial TV -- in the same way fanfic sometimes throws off constraints and just goes for it -- without aiming at shock value like seems to be what passes for 'bold' in today's commercial TV.

You're right about Axanar, tho -- that's got a helluva lot of promise, hope it follows through.
