Wednesday Google hosted a special edition of their annual "Demo Day" event featuring 11 early-stage startup companies founded by women from eight different countries. More than 450 women from 40 different counties applied for a spot, and the winner of the competition was Bridgit, a fast-growing Canadian company which provides a mobile communications platform for construction teams. Online voters also awarded the "Game Changer" title to KiChing, a startup that's actively addressing Mexico's unique e-commerce challenges. But all of the startups at Wednesday's event were already actively raising series-A funding, and "We aim to help connect them to mentors, access to capital, and shine a spotlight on their efforts," said Mary Grove, the director of Google for Entrepreneurs, addressing the Demo Day audience in San Francisco.

This is a problem that can be solved simply; by not discriminating based on gender. This event discriminates based on gender.

The problem is, the world still heavily discriminates on gender (or sex as the politically-correct insist on calling it nowadays) therefore events like this are necessary (to discriminate in the opposite direction) in order to help to begin to redress the balance. The idea is that, over time, as "the world" becomes less inherently biased, these events will be less necessary. We still very much need race, ethnicity and gender equality laws (and laws to protect as many of the other discriminated-against minority labels as possible).

It's just not worth trying to participate in one of these trolling matches to any extent, other than merciless down-mods on all the bone-headed, whiny, hard-done-by white middle class boys-who-call-themselves-men.

I'm not buying it. How is the world going to become "less inherently biased" by increasing discrimination based on sex? What these events will do is reinforce women as being a lesser gender, which will increase the need for more of these events in future.

In an ideal world it wouldn't be necessary, and I agree that it's another form of discrimination. However, it's the lesser of two evils, and it's still necessary, in my opinion, even in this day and age. I don't think it's something to take as a personal insult if you're male.

Fair enough. I'm not completely convinced at this point, although I accept I could be wrong and respect the opposite opinion as well.

I'm actually grateful that you consider my point of view and didn't just write it off as being unconstructive. Whenever I bring up my views on the matter, I'm often worried I'm going to get dismissed as a troll.

Regardless of how we get there, I look forward to the day these kinds of considerations become unnecessary. It really disturbs me that just being born a certain sex dictates the type of career role you can obtain - regardless of it being a perceived or a real disadvantage.

Sex and gender are not the same thing [wikipedia.org].

In common everyday speech, those terms are used interchangeably: mainly because the vast majority of people have their sex and gender match up.
