Square Enix has angered fans of the Final Fantasy series by announcing that the Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released in episodic installments (archive.is):

It seems that Square Enix has unleashed a torrent of anger over the episodic nature [archive.is] of Final Fantasy VII Remake, so much so that producer Yoshinori Kitase has had to step in.

In a new blog post over on their site, Kitase has done his best to give his take on the situation. As he says, "One thing that we wanted to be clear about during this weekend to accompany the new trailer was the scale of this project. We wanted to tell you this now and not in the future so that you'd share our vision for what we want to deliver. The biggest reason why we haven't done a remake until now is because it's a massive undertaking to reconstruct Final Fantasy VII from the ground up with the current technology. Producing a proper HD remake of Final Fantasy VII that maintains the same feeling of density of the original would result in a volume of content that couldn't possibly fit into one installment."

"We've seen everyone's comments and reactions to the news that Final Fantasy VII Remake will be a multi-part series and many have speculated correctly as to the reason why we have made this decision. If we were to try to fit everything from the original into one remake installment, we would have to cut various parts and create a condensed version of Final Fantasy VII. We knew none of you would have wanted that."

The thing here though is that this is not really a remake of the original PSone game, this is a whole new and different game. In that sense, building the old game's narrative and setting would indeed become a huge undertaking with this new functional approach.

The argument here is that nobody asked Square Enix to change the game like this in the first place.

XCOM was remade (XCOM2 coming out soon!) and though they did change a number of things that sparked 'outrage' like squad size limitations and only one base, I really like the game. I was very happy with the end result and have played over 100 hours of it.

What does bother me is that anyone can make any new game with new characters and new mechanics etc. Why is 'making the game fit the FF7 theme' much harder than simply making any other game completely from scratch? Given how you have all the dialogue, character story, setting, concept arts etc all done already, it should be easier than simply making a brand new game. Is including a new snowboard scene going to be so difficult?

I'll just wait for the finished product and then decide if I want to buy.

I hated the tactical gameplay, which was one of the most importannt things in xcom.

When luck counts more than wit and the game physics are just so antiintuitive that it looks like an alternative universe, why bother? I did finish it for the sake of it, hoping it would get better. It wouldn't.

I won't argue your opinion. What you didn't like, someone else might have thought a great improvement. What if you didn't like that in order to succeed, you had to pack your avenger to the gills to overcome the random number generator that was chance to hit?

There is a great Games Workshop table top game, called Necomunda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necromunda) which was squad-based turn-based tactical. The beauty of it was that you could have a massive roster of Ratskins or a tiny roster of Spyre Hunters, and it was somewhat (not really) balanced. Implementing something like this in XCOM would be great, however that was a decision that the Devs chose not to go with.

The issue is that consumers feel they are entitled to have the game made their way. XCOM 2 comes out soon, and it looks like it will have similar gameplay to the first game. I expect I'll enjoy it, but I won't pre-order it.

The same will be case for the remake of FF7. I hope they know what they are doing, and when the game is released, I'll check videos and reviews before I buy it. I may also chose to wait until all 'episodes' are done and sold in a bundle.
