TAILS Linux 1.8 is out (Dec 15, 2015)
For those that are not familiar, Tails is a live system that aims to preserve your privacy and anonymity. It helps you to use the Internet anonymously and circumvent censorship almost anywhere you go and on any computer but leaving no trace unless you ask it to explicitly. Tt is a complete operating system designed to be used from a DVD, USB stick, or SD card independently of the computer's original operating system. It is Free Software and based on Debian GNU/Linux.
Tails comes with several built-in applications pre-configured with security in mind: web browser, instant messaging client, email client, office suite, image and sound editor, etc.

I tried Tails out. It's pretty amazing what they've managed to accomplish in such a small space. Is it perfect? No. But then what is.
But I think the bigger point is that if many many people were using the sorts of encryption and anonymizing software that Tails uses, we'd all be much better off. Can the encryption be cracked? Yes. Can your identity be determined? Certainly. But if many people used this sort of software, the resources required to snoop would increase toward the point of impossibility. Simply put, all of us doing this small thing can help protect those few of us who are doing really important things like exposing injustice, fighting against surveillance, bringing attention to war crimes, etc.
So instead of saying "what can I do to help?", encourage those you know (especially nerds who can pass it along) to use encryption and the like. And then use it yourself, too.
You can't rationally argue somebody out of a position they didn't rationally get into.

From a purely selfish point of view, I wish they'd get it back below 1Gb in size (maybe they will once Claws Mail is jettisoned for good?) as I have an old 1Gb USB keyfob which I've used for Tails for years, until the last version but one, that is...

Sorry to burst your bubble, but Claws Mail does not take much space. That is its idea - being lightweight. Thunderbird/Icedove they are replacing it with is much larger.
