I looked into a number of different approaches for calculating cellular data use. Each of the big American carriers offers an app or web tool for monitoring data consumption. But I recommend against those solutions because in my testing, they were generally time-consuming or poorly designed.

Instead, the quickest way to monitor your data use is by simply using your phone. Each carrier has a hidden code that you can punch into your phone to get an update on data use.

For AT&T subscribers, the method is simple. You place a phone call to *DATA# (*3282#). AT&T will send a text message showing the amount of megabytes you have used out of your monthly allotment. It showed that so far this month I have used 464 megabytes out of 3 gigabytes.

[...] Similarly, Sprint customers can send a text message containing the word "Usage" to the number 1311 and get a text message with a data report. T-Mobile subscribers can place a call to #WEB# (#932#) to receive a quick data summary.

Thank you the numbers it gave a good feeling that "My Data Manager" was working good. Did is that my carrier is 2MB behind my phone. Must be their sample timing.

"My Data Manager" nice app on the iphone. Also tracks your usage over time and location (map) including Mobile, WiFi and Roaming. Also with basic plan data like "Start of Month" and "Cap" (6th and 4GB for me). It shows you, a daily usage "budget" and wll alert you as it goes over thresholds.

The map function is nice, so you can start looking at where you are when you use data and maybe look for other options (like a McD near by).

I have never gone over my plan limits for close to 4 years now. Also I only have a data plan, no-one else in that family has one, business need. We use per-paid T-Mobile phones and minutes get refilled based on grades (also needed - like school trip). Help keep them with a view that electronics are additive experience, not THE experience. Now on the road, I become the hot-stop for them. If many are trying to use then I feed through an old G router DD-WRT that runs on 12v. Home WiFi network over 50 devices - most are mine, but my phone acts a backup router/connection with RPi in between.
