Florida Representative Debbie Wasserman-Schultz has announced she will resign as chair of the Democratic National Committee. The resignation is to become effective after the party's convention. The organisation's e-mail system was hacked; leaked e-mails appear to confirm accusations that Wasserman-Schultz had taken action favouring Hillary Clinton in her contest against Bernie Sanders to become the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. Sanders had previously called for Wasserman-Schultz to resign, a request he reiterated in light of the leak.

Wasserman-Schultz said in a statement:

I know that electing Hillary Clinton as our next president is critical for America's future. I look forward to serving as a surrogate for her campaign in Florida and across the country to ensure her victory.

Wow. Nice and blatant. The 5-second rule in action. I hope that stirs up a few more "Bernie Bros" to be disruptive at the convention.

I hope so. BernieBros and BernieSisters. If there are no prime-time in the hall protest actions, I'll be sorely disappointed.

It used to be that the only difference between the two corporate parties was that one of them tried to hide its corruption while the other flaunted it proudly. Now we can see that this is no longer a distinction between the two, so this should help things.

That's just hilarious in light of the Politico article [politico.com] saying that Clinton wanted DWS out but Obama couldn't be bothered with getting rid of her:

Several senior Democratic officials with ties to Hillary and Bill Clinton told POLITICO that campaign higher-ups have been trying to replace the oft-off-message Florida congresswoman from the start of Clinton’s campaign late last year.

John Podesta, Clinton’s campaign chairman — and a former top adviser to Barack Obama — broached the idea of replacing Wasserman Schultz as early as last fall...

So, is DWS a disaster that should be thrown under the bus, or is she worthy of being the Clinton campaign’s honorary chair?

i.e. presumably not in charge of actually doing anything

"There's simply no one better at taking the fight to the Republicans than Debbie," Clinton said, "which is why I am glad that she has agreed to serve as honorary chair of my campaign's 50-state program to gain ground and elect Democrats in every part of the country, and will continue to serve as a surrogate for my campaign nationally, in Florida, and in other key states."

Sounds like she'll be doing something.

There does seem to be a contradiction here. I'm too cynical to believe that DWS was supporting Clinton on her own or that Clinton wanted DWS out. That Politico article has to be damage control. There is no way Clinton can't throw DWS under the bus.

"She resigning? That's what we wanted all long!" I'm not buying it.

One thing I will accept is that perhaps in the interest of party unity, it would be expedient for the DNC to get a new chair. Too many of us have been nearly certain that DWS was pulling strings (it should have been obvious when Sanders' campaign was denied access to the DNC's systems), and now there's compelling evidence that things weren't quite right. Perhaps DWS was going to step down one way or another?

I wish we would get leaks before it's too late. What's done is done now. Maybe the emails were leaked intentionally to establish a plausible narrative for ousting DWS and deniability for Clinton.
