Research based on the previous four summer Olympics has indicated that travel during the Olympics typically does not exceed baseline travel volume patterns to the host city

[...] With the exception of [Chad, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Yemen], the Games do not pose a unique or substantive risk for mosquito-borne transmission of Zika virus in excess of that posed by non-Games travel.

The CDC mentions that the assessment is based on worse case scenario projections that include assuming maximal seasonal transmission, no anti-mosquito precautions, and returning to the home country at the point of maximal viremia.

It is modestly sensationalist but only modestly. To his credit, the author actually visited the cave in the mountains of the Congo where Ebola was speculated to have originated, wearing a special suit for safety.

The Coming Plague is both sober and sobering. Garrett won the Pulitzer Prize for it. I've also heard her speak at a bookstore - she and I are both UCSC alumni. She's a very intelligent, thoughtful woman.

That really bad dustin hoffman movie were they were looking for the monkey that had "special medicine" was somehow inspired by The Hot Zone, but really only by the widespreadpublic interest in dying by bleeding out your asshole, fingernails and eyeballs.

Kuro5hin's tdillo was a Naval enlisted man. During his chemical warfare training, he was taught to defend against a "fine mist" that could be sprayed from an airplane, that caused all the same symptoms as Ebola does. That led me to speculate it was the same stuff as the virus produces in your body. If so that's gotta be the most-evil invention in all of human history.
