America started taking the first steps to becoming a police state a long time ago. Some would say the civil war as Lincoln had his secret police who operated outside the Constitution. He also really strengthened the Federal government. Others would say prohibition really started it as the Federal government mobilized its G-men to fight alcohol, and once prohibition of alcohol ended, they moved to various other forms of prohibition, including ramping up the repression of opposing political beliefs, something that started with the first red scare around the time of WWI.
Of course, like any good police state, the Americans are very good with their propaganda, with most Americans actually believing they're the land of the free and better then everyone else, just look at how full our prisons are and how many flags we have.
