In a final ruling announced Friday, the Food and Drug Administration is pulling from the market a wide range of antimicrobial soaps after manufacturers failed to show that the soaps are both safe and more effective than plain soap. The federal flushing applies to any hand soap or antiseptic wash product that has one or more of 19 specific chemicals in them, including the common triclosan (found in antibacterial hand soap) and triclocarbon (found in bar soaps). Manufacturers will have one year to either reformulate their products or pull them from the market entirely.
[...] The ruling does not affect alcohol-based hand sanitizers or wipes, which the agency is reviewing separately. It also does not affect antiseptic products used in healthcare settings.

There is a theory out there called hygene hypothesis that the hypochondriac obsession with cleanliness and keeping children away from mud and so on is leading to allergies and so forth. The theory goes that the immune system expects to be exposed to some bacteria and viruses and needs this to develop and moderate itself. A recent study shows that feeding babies peanut butter helps reduce peanut allergies later on, for instance. Its similar to how many people are avoiding sunlight exposure after being told of the danger of UV, but you absolutely need some amount of UV to make Vitamin D, now we have studies that huge numbers of the population are vitamin D deficient which can be a dangerous condition. So basically, let the kids get some sunlight and play in the mud.
