In the past two weeks, the Democratic presidential nominee has faced increased scrutiny from critics to take questions at a news conference — something she hasn't done in 273 days.

[...] New York Times columnist Jim Rutenberg criticized Clinton for her aversion toward the press in a searing piece on Sunday, and CNN senior media correspondent Brian Stelter has not been shy when offering his opinion.

"She is acting in some ways as if she is already president," Stelter said in a recent CNN appearance. "By not acknowledging the importance of a press conference, the uniqueness of a press conference — it makes me wonder how accessible she'd be in the White House as president."

[...] The campaign, which did not return requests for comment for this story, frequently cites a figure that asserts Clinton has granted more than 350 interviews this year.

[...] Holly Shulman, a former spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, told Business Insider that technology has changed the way candidates run for office and suggested there was less of a need to lean on the press to disseminate a message.

"Campaigns have changed," she said, noting that candidates can now reach voters directly through social media. "[T]his type of direct engagement has a much bigger impact on voters' decisions."

[...] Trump has continued to spotlight Clinton's refusal to take questions from the media in an open setting.

In recent weeks, the New York businessman's campaign has sent out an email each morning reminding reporters exactly how many days it has been since "hiding Hillary" last held a press conference.

[...] Brian Fallon, the campaign's top spokesman, seemed to acknowledge the importance of one on Friday. He promised ABC News that if elected, "Hillary Clinton will hold press conferences."

Hillary is talking to the press quite a bit. What's sacred about press conferences? The only ones that are peeved about the lack of "press conferences" is the insider Washington press, the pundits and the network talking heads, because it doesn't give them exposure. It's not like one question at a press conference gives any opportunity to go into anything in depth, and if it did the press wouldn't show it anyhow, other than a six second sound bite.

And Republicans, of course, because they're against everything Hillary does, and for everything she doesn't do. Same as with Obama. So they're upset about the lack of press conferences, even though they think the press is a liberal conspiracy.

Hell, I don't like the woman, but this is nuts. We'll survive her, she's a standard issue politician. But a racist "8 year old with ADHD" (in the words of the ghostwriter of his autobiography) Putin-lover who has several screws loose, maybe we wouldn't survive.

Standard checks and balances would keep Trump from getting his way if he wanted to do something truly harmful to the nation. Hillary on the other hand has the beltway pull to get her way more often than not.

You missed the second half of that comment. Hillary has more than enough beltway pull to cause real harm.

Press conferences aren't as controlled as most of Clinton's press interactions.

A standard issue felon, you mean who enriched themselves at the expense of the country. When you deliberately vote for a criminal because it is the lesser of two evils, then you are a coward. As Buzzard noted, there are checks and balances that would work against Trump which might not work so well against Clinton. But we don't have to choose between evil and evil. There are third party candidates who have kept their noses clean throughout this mess.

The issue is that Hillary needs to put on some freaking pants.

She's a loser of a candidate that can't even be bothered to pretend like she's taking the process of running for President seriously. Trump has many, many, tremendous issues, but he's trying to win. He's been trying a whole lot of strategies and they seem to be chipping away at her tiny lead. The arrogance of that woman to think that she's a sure thing and that she can just play it safe even as she's under well-justified investigation after investigation is mind-bogging to me.

I mean even her own party can't make up it's own mind as to whether she should be elected or sent to prison. Seriously, half of Democrats think she should be brought up on charges stemming from her mishandling of classified materials and she's trying to run out the clock.

Nobody wants acts of war against Russia. But I dunno, the "shtick" is that Putin was really a Communist and a member of the secret police. Probably he's a really nice guy if you know him personally, but I'm not convinced that the US should view him that way..

Hillary is talking to the press quite a bit. What's sacred about press conferences?

Because there's a wild amount of difference between baffling one person with your bullshit, and trying to convince a roomful of reporters who are expert at dissembling bullshit statements and having to answer their questions one at a time. (In fact, the reporters get time to think about the answer to the first question and come up with a fast follow up question while waiting more easily than a single reporter who has to ask q after q.) The politician can be the one who then is baffled, and you might get a nugget of truth out. That is, if you're willing to watch a whole press conference and not just rely on the 5 second sound bite on the evening news.

Wrong on so many counts. Many people, I'm one, refuse to listen to softball interviews with Diane Sawyer - we want her to face the scrum. And one can rapidly learn about important issues because those are the ones that multiple reporters hammer the subject about q after q. After you hear the tenth 15 second response on a particular issue, you learn if the person is actually talking or simply reciting the rote puppet lines.

And Republicans, of course, because they're against everything Hillary does, and for everything she doesn't do. Same as with Obama. So they're upset about the lack of press conferences, even though they think the press is a liberal conspiracy.

The Donald has held press conferences, and as such shows what a buffoon he is. Why won't Hillary allow herself to be exposed for what she is?

Hell, I don't like the woman, but this is nuts. We'll survive her, she's a standard issue politician. But a racist "8 year old with ADHD" (in the words of the ghostwriter of his autobiography) Putin-lover who has several screws loose, maybe we wouldn't survive.

Uh-huh. Bush to Obama to Clinton *or* Trump. There is such a thing called the ground, and we're screaming towards it. So you're thinking we can wait another four years to pull the ripcord? Eight? Well, let's hope we're still there to do so then and not pancakes, eh?

Do not forget that the ghostwriter is skilled in sophistry (or else he would not have been able to write that book), so any claims that he makes, in either direction, should be scrutinized. Check out Michael Cernovich and Scott Adams for a view with far more predictive power (an objective measure of truth).

You might not survive Hillary. She has known anger issues (See "hillary anger secret service"), and is being antagonistic with Russia after supplying them with Uranium in a corrupt pay-for-play deal. Watch this video and you will see why there will never be a traditional press conference with her, before or after the election:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zr1IDQ2V1eM [youtube.com]

Now ask yourself if someone with possible "thoughts and beliefs that aren't based on reality" with anger issues should be trusted with the nuclear codes. Hopefully Putin will do us a favor and spare the red states.
