from the frack-'n-crack dept.

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday morning near Pawnee, Oklahoma, rattling through at least six surrounding states in the US heartland, according to the US Geological Survey.

takyon: The story has been updated to note:

The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is telling operators to shut down 35 disposal wells that may have played a role in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that shook at least six states Saturday, Gov. Mary Fallin said. The disposal wells, which are linked to fracking and other industries that need to dispose of toxic waste water by injecting it deep into the earth, have recently drawn concern that they may actually induce earthquakes.

USGS: M5.6 - 15km NW of Pawnee, Oklahoma

I could swear that just last week I read an article about how the number of quakes in OK were way down this year. But of course, with this quake dominating headlines, it takes better google-fu than I have to find that story again.

So, is this the big one? Is Oklahoma going to slide off into the Pacific Ocean?

Not sure you should sound so happy about it.

No. Most likely just form a gaping, puckered sinkhole, as it sinks. The bright side of that, well, Oklahoma will finally look 'anatomically' correct to be the asshole of the Nation.
Maybe then we can change the name to 'New Goatse State', or something.

Maybe the Lord disapproves of tracking after all, despite what the Conservatives say?

Are there any advertising companies affected by the earthquake? I guess if the Lord wanted to make a statement against tracking, the earthquake would have been in California instead. :-)
