A pilot program was scheduled to start last week. But after no officers volunteered, Commissioner William Evans ordered 100 officers to wear the cameras. That prompted the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association to ask a judge to issue an injunction to halt the program until a new agreement can be negotiated.

Union President Patrick Rose testified Tuesday that the city violated its agreement with the union when Evans assigned officers to what was supposed to be an all-volunteer program. Rose acknowledged that he told members not to volunteer for the program before the union had reached an agreement with the city.

[...] Evans said he wants the program to begin next week and believes it's within his authority as police commissioner to order officers to wear the cameras.

No word on whether or not the Commissioner volunteered to wear a camera.

These bodycams are fucking bullshit. Countless cops are simply disabling them or wiping the data when it's convenient and there's still no accountability. Even when the footage is there it doesn't make a fucking difference. Remember Eric Garner? The man who filmed his murder, Ramsey Orta, is going to prison in a couple weeks for 4 years for that. Daniel Pantaleo is a free man and still works for the NYPD. If you think any amount of effort will make the police 'more transparent' then you are completely ignorant of the police state America has become. ACAB

Bodycams don't get disabled. They mysteriously malfunction!

Those evil cops arrested him for revealing how corrupt they are!! (and his illegal drugs) (and weapons) (and the domestic violence) (and selling drugs to cops) (twice)

Orta plans to enjoy his last months of freedom in Las Vegas, where he and his wife moved to. Just in February, police arrested him in relation to a domestic violence issue. According to reports, he threatened his wife with a knife, but the charges were eventually dropped. He’s been arrested three other times: in August 2014 for possession of a firearm, in February 2015 for allegedly selling drugs to undercover cops, and in June 2015 for selling ecstasy to an undercover cop.
