Vim 8.0 has been released. This is the first major Vim release in 10 years.

New features include:

  • Asynchronous I/O support, channels, JSON
  • Jobs
  • Timers
  • Partials, Lambdas and Closures
  • Packages
  • New style testing
  • Viminfo merged by timestamp
  • GTK+ 3 support
  • MS-Windows DirectX support

Even if Neovim never becomes status quo in the vi world, has the competition at least given Vim developers a shot in the arm?

You are at a dead end of a dirt road. The road goes to
the east. In the distance you can see that it will
eventually fork off. The trees here are very tall royal
palms, and they are spaced equidistant from each other.
    There is a shovel here.

              E/W Dirt road
You are on the continuation of a dirt road. There are more trees on
both sides of you. The road continues to the east and west.
There is a large boulder here.

                      A fork in the road
You are on a stretch of dirt road lined by tall willow trees. Their shade is pleasant, but offset by the smell of pungent manure. The road runs to the west and forks to the east and northeast.

Your crotch is still sore from a boulder.
