Vim 8.0 Released

Vim 8.0 has been released. This is the first major Vim release in 10 years.

New features include:

  • Asynchronous I/O support, channels, JSON
  • Jobs
  • Timers
  • Partials, Lambdas and Closures
  • Packages
  • New style testing
  • Viminfo merged by timestamp
  • GTK+ 3 support
  • MS-Windows DirectX support

Even if Neovim never becomes status quo in the vi world, has the competition at least given Vim developers a shot in the arm?

    Vim edges ever closer to becoming isomorphic to Emacs. The scripting inside it may actually be enough to bring Emacs keybindings to Vim, the way Emacs has long had a mode that makes it work just about exactly like vi. The C core of Vim has been larger than Emacs's for some time, and I imagine that these new changes have not made that any smaller.
